I don't think it was revolutionary, but I had a really good time watching it. It was just honest fun with some catchy songs and fun characters.

(Anonymous) 2025-07-19 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
And that's perfectly fine! Not being particularly original isn't an issue in itself either, it's just the people who pretend that it IS revolutionary and super original who are a bit silly.

No one's pretending it's original, just that it's REFRESHING in a world where a lot of kid's stuff is being super sanitized.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2025-07-19 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, I've seen plenty of people who have literally used the term "original" so... yeah, definitely not "no one".

AYRT.

I've personally not seen anyone arguing that it's new or original, just that it's fun in a way that's very sincere which is nice to see and I agree with that sentiment tbh as imo 2010's movies stepped away from sincerity a bit. It's refreshing to have that back. I've even gone into the tags on tumblr and it's mostly just people gushing about the songs/animation/cultural nods in the movie.

Fandom can be guilty of over-hyping things fans like sure but well that what fandom is for, lol.

(Anonymous) 2025-07-19 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You honestly sound bitter your own favorite magical girls aren't popular tbh

(Anonymous) 2025-07-19 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't like magical girls in general. But you sound huffy that someone mentions that "music group magical girl" isn't exactly an original concept and hasn't been for decades.

(Anonymous) 2025-07-19 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, just amused you're pitching a fit over musical magical girls. Sorry, did they blast something you like out of place? Or do you just hate magical girls that much?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-19 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
So a fairly low-key secret on fandomsecrets is "pitching a fit" now? Lol, I do see someone here pitching a fit over someone else not liking their bland little movie but it's certainly not me.
And yeah, I don't like magical girls NOR K-Pop so it does get on my nerve because it's everywhere, even after blocking tags.

(Anonymous) 2025-07-19 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I think anyone who grew up with shojo anime and/or watched LoL music vids like KDA (tbh I'm pretty sure KDA /IS/ the main inspiration behind this movie) won't claim it's groundbreaking in any way. (personaly, I think the only fresh thing in this movie was *SPOILERS* main char figuring out the question to her problem herself instead of getting support from her parent figure)
But I think what everyone forgets about is that not all people grew up with these things, and a lot of people who say that are young. It could be literally the first movie that made them see these ideas. Is it annoying? sure! would I blame them for it? eh.
So while I understand where you're coming from, OP, I'd say just ignore.
(Which you probably already did by venting here instead of lashing out, so good job!)

(Anonymous) 2025-07-19 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's more or less my thought process as well, the secret was mainly my way to vent because the movie and people gushing about how amazingly original it is is currently ALL OVER my social media no matter how much I try to block the tags so I got a bit frustrated lol.

(Anonymous) 2025-07-19 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT
Very understandable! Stay strong OP, we have the fandom opinion circle change roughly every 5 years, 10 if you're lucky. I find it one of the tedious parts of aging while in fandom. 8')

It's really weird that some people here are very insistent that nobody at all EVER has claimed that this movie is original and/or groundbreaking and that you must be lying about having heard that and come to post your lies here for some reason.

It's... almost like different corners of fandom exist, and not everyone, especially people new to magical girl fandoms, are aware of every detail of its 50+ year history or whatever...

Why does it HAVE to be? It's just FUN and that's why people like it. I don't think anyone is seeing this and going "OMG this hasn't been done EVER" or something. People just like it because it combines good characters, story and songs? Or has a vibe they like.

Honestly this movie got me curious enough to start learning about Korean pop culture and discover actual K-pop groups and try Korean Street food hot dogs (Which are AMAZING)and that's good enough for me honestly? it wasn't perfectly original but it got me to try new things and started me in exploring a culture more that I wish I had explored earlier!

(Anonymous) 2025-07-19 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think OP is saying anything has to be super innovative, it's just annoying when people who have never seen [ancient popular genre] before start talking about [latest entry to genre] as though it's something totally new. Which it might be to them, but it only shows that they're unfamiliar with the genre.

Happens with a lot of super popular canons, it's not hard to relate unless you're very committed to not relating, lol.

Ok my bad lemme rephrase.
If people are claiming its super groundbreaking i think thats weird and silly of them.
Still i maintain its fun and enjoyable

My bad for not reading /addressing that. I've just seen people saying its fun and has a cool vibe and good songs.

Summary of the secret thread.

OP: I had this experience.

Loud anons: No, you didn’t! You couldn’t have because I haven’t had that experience! You sound bitter.

Summary of your comment

(Anonymous) 2025-07-20 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
"I agree with OP and I'm mad that not everyone else does."

(Anonymous) 2025-07-20 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Also, "I had this experience" doesn't mean "Everyone is saying this all over the place," which is what OP is implying. I don't doubt that someone somewhere, maybe even a handful, have said Kpop Demon Hunters is a groundbreaking movie. Seeing those comments is having an experience. It doesn't mean that's the big dominant opinion that most people have about the movie and why they like it.

I haven't watched it yet (it's on my list though because it's right up my alley, I don't expect it to be original, don't care) but I will say I have a few fandom acquaintances who I would not expect to be into a movie like this because they tend to go for more... high-brow fandoms, like classic literature and adult TV shows... LOVED it and are reblogging fanposts from it. Not just art, but discussion too. I haven't heard them claim it's original, but maybe from their perspective it is. Since as I said, it's not the type of thing they tend to go for.

(Anonymous) 2025-07-20 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
I've been told to watch it but I find the super exaggerated anime expressions don't translate well to 3d. I felt the same about Turning Red.

(Anonymous) 2025-07-20 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
I like the movie well enough, but those faces were so fucking annoying. And my dash keeps reblogging the part with them eating like it's so unique and cool and not cringe version of years of anime

I mean, I didn't think it was amazing, but I admit some bias in loving this movie is cuz' I'm Korean. I just don't really see a lot of media (besides, ya know, coming out of Korea) that centers purely on my culture. So, admittedly, means a bit to me for that alone.

Otherwise, yeah, it's a perfectly competent movie. Nothing amazing, but I had fun watching it. Really liked some of the songs, too.

(Anonymous) 2025-07-21 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I read a review online that called the movie “high-concept” and it genuinely made me double-take. I suppose every idea is original to someone!

(I really enjoyed the movie. I think it’s a great example of an execution-forward story, like Pacific Rim — none (or few) of the ideas are NEW, it’s just done skillfully.)
