I think anyone who grew up with shojo anime and/or watched LoL music vids like KDA (tbh I'm pretty sure KDA /IS/ the main inspiration behind this movie) won't claim it's groundbreaking in any way. (personaly, I think the only fresh thing in this movie was *SPOILERS* main char figuring out the question to her problem herself instead of getting support from her parent figure)
But I think what everyone forgets about is that not all people grew up with these things, and a lot of people who say that are young. It could be literally the first movie that made them see these ideas. Is it annoying? sure! would I blame them for it? eh.
So while I understand where you're coming from, OP, I'd say just ignore.
(Which you probably already did by venting here instead of lashing out, so good job!)

Yeah, that's more or less my thought process as well, the secret was mainly my way to vent because the movie and people gushing about how amazingly original it is is currently ALL OVER my social media no matter how much I try to block the tags so I got a bit frustrated lol.

AYRT
Very understandable! Stay strong OP, we have the fandom opinion circle change roughly every 5 years, 10 if you're lucky. I find it one of the tedious parts of aging while in fandom. 8')

SA
I said "changed", the right word would be RENEWED lol

(Anonymous) 2025-07-19 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm mostly muting and blocking liberally and hoping the algorithm catches on.

It's really weird that some people here are very insistent that nobody at all EVER has claimed that this movie is original and/or groundbreaking and that you must be lying about having heard that and come to post your lies here for some reason.

It's... almost like different corners of fandom exist, and not everyone, especially people new to magical girl fandoms, are aware of every detail of its 50+ year history or whatever...

The only way I've seen it referred to as original is "this is an original IP, not an existing franchise like Marvel or a remake." And I've been in this fandom for awhile, so yeah, it's weird and baffling, especially when OP admits to hating magical girls period.

Me disliking magical girls doesn't magically make the people who sincerely think this movie is an original concept (not an original franchise, like you claim) disappear. Not my fault you personally haven't encountered it - doesn't mean they don't exist.

Maybe you and OP are primarily on different fandom platforms entirely?

Twitter and Tumblr.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2025-07-19 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah idk. I get it, they stan the movie and are part of the fandom so they feel the need to protect it or something but ... eh.
(Doesn't help that they are likely K-Pop stans as well and if there's one thing I've learned over the years it's that a big portion of K-Pop fandom are among the most thin-skinned, easily offended and prone to overreact when it comes to defending their groups fandoms there are so I can't say I'm surprised. Not saying all K-Pop stans, but strangely, often K-Pop stans.)

DA.

It could just be where I've been but I've not seen anyone refer to it as original in any sense other that it being an original story with original characters, not that the concept of the movie itself is original. But this could be on twitter where I don't go, on tumblr it's just people enjoying the movie and happy that something that's an original IP has done well with next to no promotion.

Mostly twitter and instagram. I haven't seen it on tumblr much because I don't follow anyone there who stans it (my dashboard is very inactive in general over there) - so it's definitely a matter of platforms and also which side of the algorithm hits you, I guess.

Yeah, I'm betting this is another "Tumblr fandom is the only fandom that exists, and if it's not on there it's not happening" type exchange that's so common on here.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2025-07-19 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I think so too, mostly because the only mention of fandom here has been tumblr and I don't much go there anymore.

Nope, been on Twitter and only seen people referring to it being an original IP/story with original characters, not... "OMG this is so unique!!!1!!!"

Re: DA

As we all know, there is only a handful of people on twitter and they are all a hivemind.
I've seen it a bit of twitter but mostly on instagram reels (and I guess it might be on tiktok as well by extension because a lot of people crosspost but I'm not on tiktok). Which generally skews younger so it might also be an age thing.

The closest I've come to seeing anyone say it was original is a lot of talk about how it's impressive that this movie is getting more talk and fandom than the new Pixar movie. But that's more a dig at how low Pixar's sunk than praise for the "originality" of Kpop Demon Hunters.
