Flying tips

[personal profile] philstar22 2025-07-20 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I am flying tomorrow, for the first time in 6 years. I'm terrified of flying. I've got my anxiety meds and vertigo med all set as well as my ipod and noise-cancelling headphones. Is there anything else I should be aware of? Are there any recent changes (other than the shoe thing, that I know)? Anyone have any tips for making flying easier?

drink lots of water!!! it depends on your flight time length, obviously, but it's very dehydrating so the more water you drink the more refreshed you will be when you get off the airplane. don't be afraid to ask for two cups of water or water + tea during your meal! also the trips to the toilets, while annoying, will help you move a little bit and that too helps tremendously with blood circulation. I do regularly 10+ hours flights and drinking enough water is the n.1 tip I have.
Have a safe trip! <3

Uh, I'm terrified of having to get up and used the bathroom, so I probably won't drink much. I know it means I'll be dehydrated, but I'd rather deal with that.

DA - I feel you on that. I do the same thing. Just make sure to rehydrate after the flight! Maybe add some electrolytes.

It was probably super unhealthy, but I went an entire 11 hr flight without. I hate airplane bathrooms that much.

DA

I get anxious about using the restroom on airplanes. I absolutely try my best to stop drinking liquids about 1 hour before boarding. Use the airport restroom about 5-15 minutes before boarding, and then will try my best not to use the restroom until landing.

I have tried to book for seats that are up front/close to the restroom where possible so that if I do need to use the restroom, it won't be as difficult to get to the restroom. Being in the front seats, you have more leg room so I don't feel that awkward thing of bothering other flyers seated in my aisle. And sitting near the restroom means I don't have to walk past so many people.
I've had to use the restroom on airplanes before, so it's not as bad as it used to be, but I would prefer to not have to get up from my seat when flying.
Going over a plan of how to navigate restroom usage helps me lower my anxiety over that element of flying.

Remember to breath. Always sounds silly, but when you find yourself getting nervous or the anxiety creeping higher just take some good slow deep breaths and it really does help.

Good luck and I hope you have fun!

Thanks. It is a work trip, but hoping I win my case and my client gets to stay.

I used to be afraid of flying, so I would close my eyes and pretend I was on a bus or train, or just focus on a book (while still pretending this). It really helped!

Remind yourself that it's safer than almost any other mode of transportation, too. Since my husband was an aircraft maintainer, my fears really disappeared; they and the pilots are absolutely anal about preflight checks and safety.

thanks. My problem is I have bad vertigo, which makes it pretty miserable, especially when the plane is turning.

Don’t forget gum for the ear popping! Snacks also work but I think not as well. Check your airline’s website for any restrictions if you have a carry on that has a lot of stuff in it.

I haven’t flown in a while, but when I was flying sort of regularly, I found some short set of small sitting stretches/exercises to do on a plane. Just stuff like moving your neck from side to side, rolling your shoulders, flexing your feet, etc. I’d do a little of it every couple of hours and I felt like it really helped with tension in my body.

Dress in layers that are easy to take on & off. Planes can get very warm in summer sitting on the tarmac, but once they get up to cruising altitude I'm freezing.

Another anon mentioned how dry the air is. I like to keep hand lotion & lip balm in easy reach so i can keep reapplying.

I get you. I also have anxiety over flying (something something no control over what happens between point A and point B/C).

When you feel panicked, look at the flight attendants. Are they panicking? Do they look nervous?

If they're not, you can breathe easily. They've done the route dozens of times before, likely with the same pilots, who they trust. They know the routine.

Take the max amount of Vitamin C you can the day before, of, and after your flight. Or you will get sick.

On the vertigo front, as a fellow vertigo sufferer: rehydration solution the day before. The more hydrated you are, the less your middle and inner ear give you problems. Doing it on the day just makes me feel sloshy and queasy, but pre-preparation is very helpful. When you're on the plane, look straight forward while the plane is moving on the ground and for take-off and landing, not out the window, not at the person next to you.

As a vertigo sufferer I should try that actually!

I try and pretend the plane is a big bus. I also pretend I'm on a roller coaster when the plane is taking off because that's the scariest part for me, but if I pretend I'm at Six Flags or something, it's not as scary.

Wings would be a must. And a really long run-up would help.

No I dont have anything useful to add, sorry, just a variation on the old "and boy are my arms tired" gag.

Me too, I hate flying!

Like the other anons said, drink lots of water with electrolytes after the flight. I like to address my fears with lots of facts and research, so I've put some below - if this is not helpful, definitely skip over this section.

1. Not a single plane crash has happened due to turbulence. Turbulence is like driving on a gravel road, but the sky version of it - planes are specifically designed to handle it and have lots of flaps and focus on tensile strength for just that.
2. Statistically speaking, basically every plane crash happens on the first minute between take-off and landing. I like to throw on a goofy song, let myself worry for those minutes, and then once the time is up, I know I'm good to go.
3. All commercial plane flights have at least 2 redundancies built into the plane, even for catastrophic failures, and can glide for an hour with no power. All commercial plane flights are also required to have at least 1 major airport within that hour on any given flight plan, and pilots are trained to know how to divert and glide on over should anything occur.

Thanks. I actually did okay. My biggest problem is my vertigo. Honestly the plane turning and the fear of it flipping scares me more than the idea of crashing. But I got extra meds from my doctor and zoned out with my music and and eyemask.

Thank you for #1!
I'm scared of turbulence, specifically.
