I have never seen a note like this! Is this concern even common enough in fandom for authors to be worried about??

I haven't seen it before either except for 'don't let ChatGPT/Generative AI Of The Week write a chapter for/sequel to this story', I've never seen forbidding actual writers from doing so. This is wild to me.

There are plenty of fics on AO3 that were inspired by other writers' fics, there's even a box you can check when posting 'This work is a remix, a translation, a podfic, or was inspired by another work' that lets you link that fic. And there are more than a few unofficial sequels to fics written by fic writers other than the original, so I guess it's something some authors might be worried about.

I have come up against some variation of fic authors forbidding others from basing fics on their work (or the prompts their work was based on) several times over the years, but there have been a couple of different instances that really stuck with me, the first was when I was a new fic writer years ago and the last I tripped over just recently. I was stunned by it back then and I find it bewildering that some people feel that way now, thus this secret.

Wait, we can claim ownership of prompts now? Man, I've been out of the fanfic-business too long.

AYRT - I mean certainly there are those options, and drawing inspiration from other fic has been around longer than AO3 itself. But in my experience, anyone who actually does substantially draw from another fic asks for permission first. However, there is no such thing as an original idea in fanfic so it would have to be pretty damn obvious to me before I started accusing someone of "stealing" from me without crediting. Overall, it just seems excessively cocky for someone to think their writing is so damn good that they have to preemptively ban people from copying it.

Not to mention, declaring "ownership" over fanfic seems like a slippery slope and very gray area so...

(Don't even get me started on forbidding other writers from using the same prompt.)

I think the same way about the concept of a “closed species.” Or the rules for some porn settings that say you’re not allowed to write “official” stories in those settings unless the doms always win.

Yeah, I mean, it's fan fiction? Also, they're missing out, because there is nothing more delightful than having someone write stories in your 'verse.

Blergh, yeah. It's never happened to me (I've written two fics based on other people's fics - one author wrote a long and lovely comment, and one author said nothing but DID approve it so it shows up in the "Works Inspired By This One" at the bottom of their story), but I've had friends get sniped at by authors before. Reminds me of people who get mad when my dog tries playing with their dog's ball at the public dog park.

Occasionally I've had people ask if they can write something inspired by my fics, which is really flattering! The only reason I've ever said no is, I have an ongoing AU series with extensive lore and characters that are more like OCs at this point. I'm adding to it all the time, and I don't really want others writing about scenarios I might explore in the future, before I've had the chance to do so. I feel like this is pretty reasonable. But to have it as a note on the fic in advance seems really presumptuous to me! It would not occur to me to do that.

The OTW will see you in court, Ms Rice.

Can you explain to me how it seems reasonable to you, given what fanfic is? Because I don't get this at all. I mean, if you have an issue with people using your work as a springboard, how do you justify your own writing using others' work as springboard? Why is it different? If it is okay for you to play in someone else's sandbox, why isn't it okay for other people to play in yours, a sandbox which is inside someone else's sandbox? I write fic myself and can totally understand a passing impulse of possessiveness, but this baffles me. Maybe there's a distinction I'm just not seeing.

Honestly, I think it's different when you're a lot "closer" to the source. The average creator will most likely never see your fic of their show or whatever media they made- meanwhile, being in the same space as you, fic authors Will see your recursive fic and Will know everything you write and post about it- or at least have a vague but clearer idea than the usual creator.

I would be hurt and annoyed to see someone writing fanfiction of my fanfic, especially since it would be without permission. Maybe that makes me a hypocrite. I wouldn't ever pre-emptively put an author's note like that in because I wouldn't want to draw attention to it, but it's a sentiment I agree with. Similar prompts or premises are fair game, though. But idk, I just feel a little bit threatened by the idea of a peer making recursive fanfiction of my work, especially without permission.
