I have never seen a note like this! Is this concern even common enough in fandom for authors to be worried about??

I think the same way about the concept of a “closed species.” Or the rules for some porn settings that say you’re not allowed to write “official” stories in those settings unless the doms always win.

Blergh, yeah. It's never happened to me (I've written two fics based on other people's fics - one author wrote a long and lovely comment, and one author said nothing but DID approve it so it shows up in the "Works Inspired By This One" at the bottom of their story), but I've had friends get sniped at by authors before. Reminds me of people who get mad when my dog tries playing with their dog's ball at the public dog park.

Occasionally I've had people ask if they can write something inspired by my fics, which is really flattering! The only reason I've ever said no is, I have an ongoing AU series with extensive lore and characters that are more like OCs at this point. I'm adding to it all the time, and I don't really want others writing about scenarios I might explore in the future, before I've had the chance to do so. I feel like this is pretty reasonable. But to have it as a note on the fic in advance seems really presumptuous to me! It would not occur to me to do that.

Honestly, I think it's different when you're a lot "closer" to the source. The average creator will most likely never see your fic of their show or whatever media they made- meanwhile, being in the same space as you, fic authors Will see your recursive fic and Will know everything you write and post about it- or at least have a vague but clearer idea than the usual creator.

I would be hurt and annoyed to see someone writing fanfiction of my fanfic, especially since it would be without permission. Maybe that makes me a hypocrite. I wouldn't ever pre-emptively put an author's note like that in because I wouldn't want to draw attention to it, but it's a sentiment I agree with. Similar prompts or premises are fair game, though. But idk, I just feel a little bit threatened by the idea of a peer making recursive fanfiction of my work, especially without permission.

My nephew was OBSESSED with Mace Windu and his purple lightsaber. OBSESSED. It was actually great, because when he wanted to watch Star Wars, we could skip all the bits I didn't like on the promise of getting to Mace Windu faster.

Aw, I liked Mace Windu. I thought the initial objections to training Anakin were a bit much, even if he was ultimately justified by Anakin being a baby-murdering psycho (and before anakin-stan anon goes off, no, mass-murdering children is not an understandable response to being a misunderstood prodigy with a shitty childhood). But that's linked more to my ongoing irritation with Lucas for not understanding that "prequel" implies that the audience has seen the OG movies first.

........I dated him because I liked the mustache on him. Mustaches ARE hard to pull off, IMO, but he looks quite handsome. Plus, he was just a nice romantic dude. Yeah, not the most interesting (I'm kind of shock I didn't go for Shane or Sebastian, usually the fictional guys I would date in games), but I don't know, I guess I just liked him because he was a certified dork.
