Yeah, I don't know anyone irl who's primarily into that kind of media and when they are a fan of a series in that category, it's usually pretty obvious what the draw was. Like, a lot of adults were fans of Stranger Things, but that show was a freakin nostalgia bomb. The PJO series is a different kind of nostalgia bomb, and a decent chunk of the fandom drama is probably because the actors are actually age-appropriate and it's freaking people out. You do find people who technically meet that definition online, but they're mostly western animation/anime fans, which is a little bit different given that all the characters are usually played by adults and the kids look and act like middle-aged adults a decent amount of the time.
