I'm at the point in my life where I don't really care about characters under the age of like....16. And even then, they have to be "adult teens" for me to enjoy.

Same. I think it's an extension of the Facebook Era of social media and the general culture of privacy breakdown these days, but man some people really need to remember that boundaries exist for a good reason.
(Also applies in the opposite direction: fandom really needs to just leave creators/etc the fuck alone more often.)

There are honestly a bunch of ships where I liked them until they became in canon and then canon portrayed them in a way that ruined the ship for me.

House/Cuddy. Booth/Bones. Back when I was into Harry Potter, Tonks/Remus was a big one. I shipped it until it became canon.

Overwatch has some cool concept designs. Proto Moira had really cool tentacles which would be so much cooler than her final design. :(

I was about to say my excuse is that I'm into anime and JRPGs and most of those have teen casts by default (even if a lot of them are, to borrow from the comment above, "adult teens") but "I'm into anime and JRPGs" as an excuse might just support your hypothesis.

I think the same way about the concept of a “closed species.” Or the rules for some porn settings that say you’re not allowed to write “official” stories in those settings unless the doms always win.
