Re: Questions/advice -tonsil infection vs cold

Is there an easy way to tell the difference between a cold and a tonsil infection? The back of my throat on the left side feels like there's some swelling/obstruction and itching, and I get tonsil stones all the time, but otherwise I pretty much feel like I have a cold.

I'm running a low fever even with ibuprofen and I don't want to go to the doctor if all I need are rest and fluids. I'll have to take the bus and if it is a cold, I don't want to pass it around.

So, in my experience colds don't cause a fever. And also, colds cause general throat pain for me, but not specifically located swelling like you have.

But that's just me. I'd say go to a doctor just in case, though.

Check for white spotting on back of throat. But that sounds like strep throat as someone who gets it 3-4 times a year. It always makes the left side of my throat swell and hurt. If it strep, see if they will give you a z pac instead of the like two weeks of antibiotics.

I agree with the other comments that the few is a good indicator that it's not just a common cold. You can wait a couple of days to see if it gets worse, but if it's strep throat, the sooner you get on antibiotics the better.

That does sound like a tonsil infection. I use to get frequent tonsil stones before changing the types of calcium tablets that I use to take and started gargling water/salt water at the end of every day - didn't make them completely disappear but thankfully get a whole lot less now than before.
I'd say try and treat it like you're removing a stone while taking cold meds if you don't feel that bad for now.
