Oh no, I thought the tweet was funny before I read the secret

From just this secret (I haven’t read the article you mention) I feel a little conflicted about this, especially because they tagged him in that tweet. Tagging a celebrity feels like an imposition or actively asking for a response. I also think that while his comment wasn’t super positive, it was pretty benign – more of a joke than an insult or a shaming comment.

Maybe I’m missing a bunch of context from other examples. I do think I might feel differently if he went around commenting at random fans or was more argumentative.

Agreed with all of the above. Well said.

I have the same reaction as him, so I'm cool with it lol.

I mean, they’re not very good fans if they view Joe as someone to be heartbroken over. There’s having your own interpretation of something and then there’s missing the whole point of it. There were a lot of very vocal fans for that show that could most kindly be described as dangerously stupid.

(Anonymous) 2025-07-31 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be interested in your idea of an unkind description LOL

(Anonymous) 2025-08-01 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
For real. The entire point of his character is that he only gets away with what he does for so long because he's attractive and charming. He's objectively an awful person.

Normal people outside of fandom think lusting after and sympathizing with killers is weird and creepy.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-01 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
That's because fandom is one of the only places to gain media literacy and learn thinking skills like "what someone writes or likes in fiction doesn't reflect their real world morals" anymore.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-01 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Heck, even in fandom, woobifying villains is often seen as weird and creepy. Thinking a villain is an awesome and fascinating character (even understandable/sympathetic on some levels), sure. But people generally back away if you start treating a character who is an awful person like a cute little meow meow.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-01 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah no. If they wanted to be left alone to fetishize a murderer don't @ him about it. As soon as you tag him you lose that argument.

Anthony Geary played Luke Spencer on General Hospital. After the character raped a woman, Tony had women scream at him that they wanted Luke/him to rape them. Now, those women obviously didn't want to be raped, but Geary was at best bothered, and at worst traumatized by the experience. I can imagine Penn might want to keep Joe's fandom somewhat reasonable when he engages with them.

I recently saw a clip of Ian Somerhalder where he says that back in the day he would come to the writers of producers distraught because (paraphrased because I can't find the clip or remember the exact quote) "Damon could kill a schoolbus full of children and the fans would say, 'oh he had a fight with Elena' or 'they ran out of bourbon in the house'". Ian found it genuinely disturbing what fans were okay with just because he was good-looking and charming.

The show is basically a PSA about red flag dudes. He wasn’t the only one schooling the fans; the entire cast and crew were doing it.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-01 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
That sucks, actually. They should spend more time in fandom or read up on fandom and realize fans don't do this because they're children who just don't understand the point.

Yeah, if you don't want to be shamed DON'T FUCKING TAG ACTORS. I don't know who this is but his twit is funny and it's not being a douche, actors are people and they don't need to be constantly involved in your blobros

(Anonymous) 2025-08-01 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Playing devil's advocate for a second here though, I think you could read this particular comment mostly as a comment on the actor/the actor's skills rather than just mindless thirsting after the character (mainly the "actor as Joe is breaking my heart" part).

(Anonymous) 2025-08-01 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
No I'm sorry, Penn is 100% in the right here and the fact you can't see that is a concern.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-01 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Then don't go seeking for approval from him.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-01 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
There is something off putting about his attitude.

Like, do you think she doesn't know? Are you mad that people are enjoying the show you've created? And, from my limited understanding of the show, Joe is romanticized as *fuck* and that's the point, it's from his pov. I'm probably projecting, but it feels like some creators just don't respect female fans even when they're directly targeting female fans.

Anyway.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-01 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Tagging the actor is where someone looses the right to be mad about him responding with his own opinion, he's just not responding in the way you like. I'm sure if he was playing along you'd be all over him OP.

Lmao where was the comment thread with people talking about how actors are treated if they don't play along with the fandom? Case in point here from OP, how dare the man not respond the way you wanted him to.

They should not have tagged him.
