question about recycling?

So, I noticed when I was throwing old glass bottles into the recycling bin (I couldn't place them in, because the bin is full of angry wasps, okay. Had to stand a couple of meters back out of range and hurl stuff in) that a lot of people had neglected to take the lids off their jars and bottles. So, do glass recycling plants have ways to sort out the plastic and metal jar tops? They must have thought of this, somehow, right? Or do they just dump them all into the melter and just accept a certain amount of metal and plastic as an acceptable level of contaminant? I assume the plastic at least burns off.

Anyone know? And anyone know why the wasps are so extraordinarily angry this year? Little buzzing bastards.

It will depend entirely on the facility that recycles for your community. In some European countries, all recycling is sent to one of a very few facilities and it is all hand sorted. So lids and stuff get separated out and sent to the correct production line. Some communities and even countries do the sorting in one location and then disperse the materials to different processing locations. If you’re in North America, there’s a high probability that everything will go straight to the landfill.

I think this varies depending on your location and the individual company policy. Mine asks people to clean out jars and replace the cap. They've got a sorting line where people are employed to go through and weed out the inevitable stuff that gets in that isn't accepted at this recycling facility, or pick out obvious things that don't belong like someone's car keys. (That happens a lot.)

As for wasps, hell if I know. They're always bad out here because I'm in a rural area and they try to build nests on your walls, in doorways, the eaves, etc. All this warm weather must suit them. I'm guessing someone else must've failed to clean out something sugary out of their empty jars and wasps love that shit.

Our county recycling pickup doesn't take glass-- if we want to recycle it, we have to take it to the special glass recycling stations at local parks.

I actually don't know how they handle the curbside recyling. I know it's picked up in a different truck than the bagged garbage, but after that? Who knows.

Even despite Enterprise and other prequels, I still love trying to fit Forbidden Planet into Star Trek chronology and canon. It just fits so nicely. I wish canon showrunners would stop making it so hard.

Water

We need it to survive. But does anyone else sometimes have a rough time drinking it? It feels like the water is physically hard.

I'm not really sure what you mean by "physically hard" unless you're trying to drink ice cubes. But assuming that your water isn't weird in itself, it's mostly a matter of getting used to it. I had friends who swore up and down their tap water tasted funny and must be bad in some way, and they just couldn't stand to drink it. Their water was fine. But they had a terrible diet soda habit where they put away close to a 12 pack on a hot day and it fucked with their palate until plain old water didn't taste right.

These days, they make plenty of powdered drink mixes to convince people to drink water, but you're probably better served in the long run if you just keep at it until your tastes adjust.

Yup. I find it gross, so I have to choke it down. I've found that making it ice cold helps. So does using it to dilute juice.

The thing is, actually while plain water is better for you, for your actual need for water drinking anything is fine. Other things may have other problems for your health, which is why water is better. But in terms of your need for water, you are fine to drink anything. So really, don't worry as much about it.

Personally, I'm picky about water. For some reason a lot of water tastes weird to me. I drink water home, but when I'm out I don't drink that much of it.

Is there any media you love where you just can't get into the fanfic?

Give us options

I get why sites use multi-factor authentication. But give us some options, please. Not everyone has the same things available all the time. I don't keep my cellphone on me at all times. If I'm on my computer on my bed, I'm not going to want to get up and go to the other room where my purse is to get my cell phone. Please give us the option for email authentication or something else.

What is extra annoying, though, is sites that require both. Indeed now requires both. I got the code sent to my email, but then they want me to authenticate my phone too. Come on. All I want to do is do some job searching while I'm laying in bed here with my cat.

Cat Question

Has anyone dealt with a cat having arthritis before? I think my cat is struggling with it right now.

A year ago our vet told us she was showing some early signs, not worrying yet, but should keep an eye. But now she's really showing it. She doesn't want to jump up as much where she used to be a climber. And today she downright seems in pain.

Going to call vet monday. But just wanted to see if anyone else had dealt with this and what things might help.

Hello! Well if anyone is going, or has gone, or has gone to other Fan Expo shows, I have a few questions please! Can I bring in my own water bottle, are there water stations I can fill it with? Next, the site states there can be bag searches, and I know props have to be inspected, but can I carry a backpack in?

I'm honestly interested in the art alley and vendor alley, I just don't know what I can carry in besides my purse. Thank you!
