There's been someone who's confided in me before that she can't stand somebody else, but when they interacted it still looked like they were the best of friends and the other girl didn't have a clue.

Haha, I'm doing something similar to this right now. I can't stand my boyfriend's roommate, but I never act like it when others are around. It'd make things awkward whenever I was in their room. Besides, we have a lot of mutual friends, and drama would be bad. He's not always horrible, so I just try to avoid subjects I know I don't want to hear his opinions on. I'll play nice, but we'll never really be friends.
