If English people didn't want to be cast as evil villains... Well, all of the last thousand years could be something that English people could have done differently.

Everyone else in world history was nice.

Lol right? Like, sure British imperialism bad and all but let's not forget that they are far, far from the only country (inside AND outside of Europe) with an imperialistic history that messed up other countries.

"but other countries did bad things too" isn't the strong argument you think it is.

Sure, other countries did it too. But we weren't talking about those. We were talking about the English. Plus Britain has the disadvantage that one of their former colonies is a current day superpower, (two, if you count India) unlike the Dutch for instance, who were just as bad, but there are no Hollywood movies about their atrocities in Indonesia or Suriname.

Explain.

Go to Wikipedia and look up "whataboutism."

"it's OK for everybody else to do it! but not this one country," got it.

Are you arguing that it's okay?

What, the rhetorical device "whataboutism"? No.

Empires? No. It's just the way the world worked for many, many thousands of years. Hopefully we've moved on, though tbh it looks as though we're now repeating the mistakes of 90 years ago. But no-one who's studied history or archaeology in any depth at all is under any illusion that any large group of people, except perhaps the Moriori, has been nice. Happy to learn otherwise.

Take a look at animated borders in the continent/s of your choice for the last few thousand years. It's like amoebae fighting for position.

No, I do not think empires are OK. Any of them.

Sheesh.

“Everyone else did it, so you can’t talk about anything we specifically did or I’ll throw a big baby tantrum about it in the comments!”

"Someone mentions that my pet evil empire wasn't the only evil empire in history so I'll throw a big baby tantrum about it in the comments".

I am not responsible for things the government of where I happened to be born did 300+ years ago, or even 70 years ago, and it's a really weird argument that people make that somehow we should feel guilty over it. I think colonialism was awful but I feel no personal responsibility over it because I was not sat there directing the boats to go pillage the Caribbean.
