Probably too many weird Americans who can't tell the difference between a Hollywood movie and actual history.

Because too many dumb people can't tell apart an unbiased fact based media and biased garbage, even in history books, much less fictional movies. People think Mexico is all yellow because of the filter they use in Hollywood.
British also like to keep under wraps the amount of colonialism the had and still have. They hated Irish people as recently as 1970s. A bit of a sensitive topic. As a foreigner you should shut up and nod when Irish or British tell you this or that movie is wrong.

To be fair, the English were not shown in the best light in that movie (yes, yes, they've historically done terrible things, but not all of the ones shown), so maybe they're defensive about the inaccuracies that make them, as a people, look worse than they really were. And given the whole monarchy thing, the movie implying that there was a baby that wasn't of the English royal bloodline could probably be a big deal to some.

Dunno, but maybe they're so used to being the bad guys in fictional settings that being the bad guy in a "historical" setting stings all the harder.

Agreed. Someone was legitimately upset with me that I laughed at Craig Ferguson cracking jokes about how a statue of William Wallace was modeled after Mel Gibson in "Braveheart". I didn't interpret Craig's jokes as "Hollywood is sooooooo amazing" and more "Scottish history is badly represented, even Scots can't do it well". But...OK.

I remember someone explaining to me that the mentor needs to be removed from the plot to keep them from solving the plot themselves. All I could think was "If the heroes are the ones who solve the plot, why did you create another character who could have solved it?" The worst problems in real life, after all, are the ones where your prospective "mentors" are absent, incompetent, or guiding you towards suffering for their own benefit.

I feel like it might be some of what was said above me re: not being the MC even though they're stronger, but also sort of a ham-fisted way to not be pigeonholed into following the Death of the Mentor trope of the classic hero's journey. If they just fuck off then no one can crit you for killing them off, right?

but nah I agree, having someone clearly more capable fly in, dump some exposition like a dog turd, and then fly back out is equally crit-worthy.

This character is a universal archetype of the hero's journey. Sorry, I guess, that almost all cultures across place and time have told stories so badly?

I didn't know this was a common trope but wtf? Can't they just be reincarnated into a new body?

There was a popular Romeo and Juliet type folklore story from my parents' motherland where a pair of star crossed lovers jump off a cliff because their families forbade them to get married. They promised to find each other in the next life by placing moles/beauty marks on the right side of their necks.

Jumpcut to decades later where a girl is at a popular rest stop and she is by the river getting a drink of water. She notices a boy nearby and sees he has a mole on his neck in the same spot she has one.
She doesn't know what it means but she's drawn to the boy.
She finds out he already has a girlfriend but eventually they remember their past lives and get together at the end of the story.

Why do the xianxia stories need dead bodies??

And yeah, 90% of her fanbase turns me right off. They make being a Swiftie their entire personality and that's... wrong for a lot of reasons. The crash is going to hit them hard.
