I imagine it's the same reason why family-friendly G-rate dmovies/shows/games are the ones with the kinkiest fandoms, and why the majority of fic for grimdark edgelord everything-is-grey movies/shows/games is fluff and fix-its and babies-ever-after.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-17 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yeah. Lots of pink and bows and cutesy manners are deliberately used for hiding censorship, entitlement, manipulation, arrogance, lack of empathy, and selfishness. They can't really get away with that in an inherently "problematic" fandom, because everyone who is a fan of whatever the "problematic" show/movie/book/game is likes to understand and explore these issues and will absolutely call them out on their gaslighting bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-17 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
The Hazbin Hotel fandom would beg to differ.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-17 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not an impossibility. But that is why the trends are like that. Hazbin Hotel has the awful modifier of having a shit ton of kids in it.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-17 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you nailed it. It's more covert shittiness that other people don't really want to deal with. They want to think that it's a cozy, friendly, gentle, sweet, positive community, and don't want to rock the boat. So sometimes the assholes just run amok and ruin things for everyone else, and the whole thing gets dragged down with toxicity.

Uh, no. While of course certain shows/games/whatever do use cutesy as a foil, that is an entirely different genre to series that are y'know actually intentionally wholesome and cute. See Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, compared to the videogame Journey (which is not toxic at all as far as i am aware). One is intentionally devious with its presentation while the other basically just restores your faith in humanity.
Intention is the crux here, and you'd be an idiot to confuse the two.

On the other hand, there's also the whole deal where 90's cartoons in particular purposely pushed against the grain (which is what I assume you mean with all that "deliberately hidden" garbage) as a means to bridge the gap between kid and adult viewership. They did this with mentions and insinuation, yes, but not in the 'devil spewing, hate of all evil, etc, etc' style you're attempting to imply. And again, those are of a specific genre, none that I can think of falling into the specifics of "cozy" which OP is actually talking about.

I wasn't talking about the media using it that way. I was talking about the fans.

I feel like a part of it is because these so-called "cozy" games are actually some of the most stressful fucking shit I've played. I'm not surprised in the slightest that they breed toxicity amongst the players.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-17 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like the cozy fantasy groups I've tried to get into suffered from toxic positivity. You can't crtique or dicuss things at all unless it is 100% praise, which I find very frustrating.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-17 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I have noticed that a lot. Some people seem to feel like a cozy upbeat game should have a community that is positive vibes only, and that is definitely not fun to deal with.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-18 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
I find this to be the case in most if not all fandoms these days. but that might just be me.

It happens for the same reason Nintendo fandom has a lot of pedophiles in it, bad people use the cutesy exterior as a way to hide their shitty personalities and goals. Compare that to horror fandoms which are usually more chill because the fans are already engaging with questionable material and often have experience with predatorial people so they can sniff them out fast. The competitive Super Smash Bros. scene is rocked multiple times a year because high profile players keep being outed as child molesters.

Compare this to Silent Hill fandom where the owners of the wiki sniffed out a delusional guy who was off his rocker about circumcision. (Not saying that circumcision isn't bad, it's genital mutilation, but this guy was deeply unwell and insanely aggressive against anyone who kept asking "but what does this have to do with Silent Hill?") They dealt with him quickly and there hasn't been a huge scandal coming out of Silent Hill fandom since. (The griping about Silent Hill 2 Remake came from tourists trying to farm SH2R for content. The actual fandom embraced the remake.)

But Silent Hill deals with shit like child abuse, domestic violence, intimate partner violence, stalkers, rape, etc. Nintendo has Animal Crossing.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-17 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Animal Crossing is one of the games I had in mind when I made the secret. It has a multiplayer aspect but like, it's not ranked, it's not competitive, there are no leaderboards. If someone else wants to time travel or cheat to get the max bells or the exact villagers they want or whatever, it has zero impact whatsoever on me/my game. But people got so fucking weird about it.

I think you're right that the cutesy cozy positive surface of the game is used as a shield for some people who either have bad intentions, or are just shitty people in general. And people are more likely to go into it feeling like others are going to be kind, I guess? And don't call things out as much?

(Anonymous) 2025-08-18 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
You're forgetting the fact that pedophiles specifically target Nintendo type games because those games are meant for children. No pedo is going into a Silent Hill discord looking for marks because legally the game is not permitted for kids, and kids who are going to be there regardless aren't as easy to groom as the five year olds they'll find playing Mario Cart.

That type of toxicity is not about the game itself, or the genre, only about the demographic they're attempting to exploit. It's completely unrelated.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-17 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I think online communities for online games in general always become toxic, no? Cozy games being the exception to this rule would surprise me more.

Are there online games that aren't toxic, or totally lack any kind of toxicity?

note: I don't mean online communities for single player games, they're a different genre

(Anonymous) 2025-08-18 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I wondering the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-18 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
A more generous theory than most of these is that the people most in need of comfort and turn to cozy games for it are the ones with the most issues, many are kids and young adults who don't have the means to get real help, and unchecked issues can foster toxic behavior over time.

This!

+1

(Anonymous) 2025-08-18 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
i think this is part of it. not everyone so no one start reeeeeing at me. but some of the people who are attracted to these games are shitty people looking for something they are unable to get in real life (coziness, peace, comfort, good vibes with others) because they are shitty people, and then their toxicity fills the online community

again i am not referring to everyone so if you love cozy games this is not a personal attack on you lol.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-18 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, and I feel a part of this is the theme itself. Every fandom has its toxicity, but a cozy type fandom tends to stand out with its toxic fans because of the contrast, y'know.
Also I get the feeling that the relaxed theme makes people more free with their opinions because of the theme, and that the audience tends to be younger, who are generally more severe with their opinions. But then again, I'm just guessing.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-18 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
good point. it's something similar with ya fiction. the community and discourse of adult genres is almost always more chill than the ya. i don't read much ya, but sometimes i do, and the reviews on goodreads are just so much more serious and tense than reviews for adult books

(Anonymous) 2025-08-18 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
and when there's some huge blowup in the book world, it's usually to do with a ya title

(Anonymous) 2025-08-21 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)

*points at Palia* yeah

(Anonymous) 2025-08-22 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
OP here: Palia is 100% one of the main inspirations behind the secret. What is wrong with that community? Why are they like that?
