I imagine it's the same reason why family-friendly G-rate dmovies/shows/games are the ones with the kinkiest fandoms, and why the majority of fic for grimdark edgelord everything-is-grey movies/shows/games is fluff and fix-its and babies-ever-after.

Well, yeah. Lots of pink and bows and cutesy manners are deliberately used for hiding censorship, entitlement, manipulation, arrogance, lack of empathy, and selfishness. They can't really get away with that in an inherently "problematic" fandom, because everyone who is a fan of whatever the "problematic" show/movie/book/game is likes to understand and explore these issues and will absolutely call them out on their gaslighting bullshit.

I feel like a part of it is because these so-called "cozy" games are actually some of the most stressful fucking shit I've played. I'm not surprised in the slightest that they breed toxicity amongst the players.

I feel like the cozy fantasy groups I've tried to get into suffered from toxic positivity. You can't crtique or dicuss things at all unless it is 100% praise, which I find very frustrating.

It happens for the same reason Nintendo fandom has a lot of pedophiles in it, bad people use the cutesy exterior as a way to hide their shitty personalities and goals. Compare that to horror fandoms which are usually more chill because the fans are already engaging with questionable material and often have experience with predatorial people so they can sniff them out fast. The competitive Super Smash Bros. scene is rocked multiple times a year because high profile players keep being outed as child molesters.

Compare this to Silent Hill fandom where the owners of the wiki sniffed out a delusional guy who was off his rocker about circumcision. (Not saying that circumcision isn't bad, it's genital mutilation, but this guy was deeply unwell and insanely aggressive against anyone who kept asking "but what does this have to do with Silent Hill?") They dealt with him quickly and there hasn't been a huge scandal coming out of Silent Hill fandom since. (The griping about Silent Hill 2 Remake came from tourists trying to farm SH2R for content. The actual fandom embraced the remake.)

But Silent Hill deals with shit like child abuse, domestic violence, intimate partner violence, stalkers, rape, etc. Nintendo has Animal Crossing.

I think online communities for online games in general always become toxic, no? Cozy games being the exception to this rule would surprise me more.

Are there online games that aren't toxic, or totally lack any kind of toxicity?

note: I don't mean online communities for single player games, they're a different genre

A more generous theory than most of these is that the people most in need of comfort and turn to cozy games for it are the ones with the most issues, many are kids and young adults who don't have the means to get real help, and unchecked issues can foster toxic behavior over time.

I agree, and I feel a part of this is the theme itself. Every fandom has its toxicity, but a cozy type fandom tends to stand out with its toxic fans because of the contrast, y'know.
Also I get the feeling that the relaxed theme makes people more free with their opinions because of the theme, and that the audience tends to be younger, who are generally more severe with their opinions. But then again, I'm just guessing.

It's rough. I do agree with you that the chemistry is great.

They did try to make up for the problematic of it all in the last season, but IMHO that just made it an entirely different show.

It's actually true that people have a harder time telling people apart when they are different than what you're used to seeing every day.

I really dislike shows that have very similar looking people in the cast for this reason (when we're talking US cable TV, it's blandly handsome guys with the same dark hair, similar hairstyles and occasionally, stubble). I really need some of these characters to be styled differently. Office dramas are the worst if they're all wearing suits. Same for military ones when everyone's in the same uniform and they CAN'T give the characters much different hair. You can see how the original Top Gun was an exception, except it seems to me that often, most of the cast in something like that all look like the character Hollywood.

Please give some characters in shows wild haircuts or glasses or something!
