I don't think it's as straightforward as you're making it out to be. Sure, if you read ebooks on your phone or computer, then Libby's very easy to use.

If you read ebooks on a Kobo or other epub ereader, however, then transferring a library book to your ereader requires wrangling with Adobe Digital Editions, and every time the program updates you have to reset stuff so that it works again, and sometimes it just inexplicably fails to transfer a book properly and even my tech-y brother can't sort it out for me.

Or if you read ebooks on a Kindle and you live outside the US (and possibly some other countries, but the UK is definitely not one of the lucky ones), then Libby straight up won't allow you to transfer a library book to your ereader.

Outside of technological issues, Libby can also present difficulties for people who read popular series. You only get a limited number of holds and checkouts (six and six in my library, though I know some libraries are more generous). Trying to make sure that I can read a series in order, without such a long wait between books that I forget what's happening, is quite a juggling act at times.

Compared to all that, yes, piracy is easier. I still use Libby a lot, but when I hit a snag like an ebook refusing to transfer to my Kobo, or a three-month wait for Volume #4 in a series when I've just read Volumes #1-3 and Volumes #5-6 are already ready for me to checkout, then I'm very happy piracy is there to ease the process for me.

You explained much better than I did the difficulties of using Libby! Our library has a 7 hold limit and it's frustrating because some items have a 6 month hold wait and the system doesn't have enough money to buy more copies to lessen the wait. Also, our libby has a lot of items listed that now have 0 copies but are still listed. My poor wishlist is littered with these.

I also read on my Pocketbook E-ink reader and that helps me manage series, even when I'm downloading them from Libby. I add all the Libby ebooks to Calibre and once I have the complete series in hand, I start reading.
