Thank you for all your hard work! It's been a long time since I've last been here but I appreciate each and every secret that gets made. Especially those that someone else takes the trouble to make for somebody else.

Great book covers!

(Anonymous) 2025-08-23 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
What do you consider to be an example of an awesome book cover? (The actual book may or may not be awesome, this is just about the cover art/design.)

I get weirdly passionate about the newish covers for John le Carré’s books.

They’ve got this great art style with only a few colors and very clear silhouettes.

Sometimes it’s an image that’s just very evocative of the overall story. Sometimes they depict something that is very central to the plot, but in a way you only realize once you get towards the end of the story.

An image gallery of the art from the artist’s page

I'll add to this list, at the risk of being mocked... the Twilight saga.

Sure, the books are total shit and the design was imitated to tedium and beyond, but the original idea-- a simple, iconic image with a limited color palette-- really did pop on bookshelves.

Choke, a book by the guy who made Fight Club. The one with the musculature(?) depiction of a human. Partly because artistry was one of my biggest interests when I first read it, but also because it both stands as an active aid when I need it when drawing, and also is just so unique as a cover at the same time.

I found this book in a garage sale, and something about it is just so simplistically wonderful to me. It's Abbot's New Card Games, though looking it up online I can't find the cover I'm talking about- so here's hoping:

What I find especially lovely is the inside cover though, so here's a look:

There's more, but I'll save you from the trouble of my dreaded copypasting. I have a lot of books I've bought, and have wanted to buy based on cover alone, but this is the one I've always thought was beautiful. (learning the games however, is another story entirely!)

Whate mistakes have you made?

(Anonymous) 2025-08-23 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ordered chicken fajitas from the local Mexican restaurant and they added the hottest jalapenos I've ever had. I had to eat a banana to try and stop my brain from cooking because I don't have any milk.

In a similar vein, my local burrito bar once had a basket of chocolate habanero chillies at the counter. I took one back to the pub and (on a dare) bit into it like it was an apple. Followed by half an hour of sweating and crying and hiccuping.

For future references, plain, unbuttered unseasoned rice or bread will also help.
I'm assuming the spelling mistake is a deliberate joke.

This is not the question my depressed brain needs to hear right now.

My mom was making jalapeños poppers from our garden the other day and as she was washing her hands when she realized she had a bit of leftover cheese stuff on her finger, and literally the whole house thought she was dying after tasting it. She was horking up a lung and everything. We all knew she thought ketchup was spicy, but she really had us worried for a while then.

my whole life is a mistake.

Fandoms you had hoped had grown up

(Anonymous) 2025-08-23 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
For some reason, I thought Supernatural had gotten over their misogyny. But today I went back and forth with people who thought that John Winchester, the man who abused and neglected his small children, was a better person that Mary Winchester, a woman who came back to life and didn't immediately want to mother two complete strangers who were technically older than her and said they were her kids.

What fandoms and their issues have not matured?

Just saw that the Kaeluc antis are still going strong and it's kind of pathetic how they're more obsessed with the ship than the actual shippers.

I think I would have appreciated the Osomatsu-san fandom more if they had grown up and realized they were fans of a show that would never have a core plot, and was 100% gag based humor. The backlash to the movie not having a plot and mostly just being tons of jokes about childhood best friends was weird.

Also, Fire Emblem free space.

Naruto lmao. The same ship wars being the main thing, but shoutout especially to the occasional comment about how Sakura is the antichrist because she made fun of Naruto for being an orphan at the very beginning of the series. Of all the ways you could criticize Sakura's lackluster character development, you just... invent something to pretend she never moved past?

All of them.
I've just given up any hope that any fandom I love, or loved, will outgrow any of its childishness. If only because a large majority of them are aimed at a young adult fanbase. Even an older fandom I was interested in had a newer remake that just flooded the fandom with kids.
I've had a real hard time connecting with any fandom since my youth, but seeing them saturated with the same old problems, even more so now than they used to be, to the point I've finally run out of things to interact with, let alone read, has really left me feeling much more alone than I'm ready to deal with some times.

Harry Potter fandom. I had hoped the members of it would see the ongoing real world harm that it is doing and enabling, and taken a moral stance. Given how many self professed liberals and progressives cite it as a formative influence, this should have been a no brainer. That they cannot even give up on HP and chicken sandwiches, tells us exactly why the GOP is going to be in power forever more.

How do you contribute to fandom?

Do you write? Do art? Make meta articles? Read fanfic and leave lovely comments?

I write fic, not a lot but when I’m into something I usually make at least one fic due to it taking over my brain.

I used to make GIFs on Tumblr! I've tried again recently after getting a *clears throat* free copy of Photoshop but it is so much more time consuming than I remember! I also make rec lists on tiktok and tumblr. Does discussing fandom on Reddit/Tumblr etc count? Lol.
