Great book covers!

What do you consider to be an example of an awesome book cover? (The actual book may or may not be awesome, this is just about the cover art/design.)

I get weirdly passionate about the newish covers for John le Carré’s books.

They’ve got this great art style with only a few colors and very clear silhouettes.

Sometimes it’s an image that’s just very evocative of the overall story. Sometimes they depict something that is very central to the plot, but in a way you only realize once you get towards the end of the story.

They do have nice visual pop, even if it's obvious that the artist was told to model Smiley on Gary Oldman instead of making him the dumpy little fat fellow he is in the books.

Those are nice!

I'll add to this list, at the risk of being mocked... the Twilight saga.

Sure, the books are total shit and the design was imitated to tedium and beyond, but the original idea-- a simple, iconic image with a limited color palette-- really did pop on bookshelves.

In theory, I agree but I hate them for the simple fact that so, SO many cover designs tried to jump on the bandwagon and copied it wholesale.

That happens a lot in design though. Heck, look how many movie comedies had a poster comprising the title in a big all-caps red font on a plain white background with a picture of the protagonist(s). TV Tropes actually devoted a page to it!

idk, and I'm honestly second guessing myself here, but whenever I think of and apple, Death Note did it so much better. (lol, please say at least one twilight book had an apple as a cover, my brain will be entirely grateful)

Choke, a book by the guy who made Fight Club. The one with the musculature(?) depiction of a human. Partly because artistry was one of my biggest interests when I first read it, but also because it both stands as an active aid when I need it when drawing, and also is just so unique as a cover at the same time.

I found this book in a garage sale, and something about it is just so simplistically wonderful to me. It's Abbot's New Card Games, though looking it up online I can't find the cover I'm talking about- so here's hoping:

What I find especially lovely is the inside cover though, so here's a look:

There's more, but I'll save you from the trouble of my dreaded copypasting. I have a lot of books I've bought, and have wanted to buy based on cover alone, but this is the one I've always thought was beautiful. (learning the games however, is another story entirely!)

This is a simple yet effective design! Also the inside is clever, thanks for sharing!

I just loved it so much! <3
