(Anonymous) 2025-08-24 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)What can I say, I like extra material like photos and artist notes.
And don't take it hard from the commenters above me, acting like "gotta have every variant" isn't one of the most common fandom mindsets. They just don't want to admit TS fandom counts as something like Star Trek fandom or anime fandom.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-24 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)I think you make a good point in your last paragraph. Tons of fans have multiple figurines of the same character, or have multiple shirts for the same show, or versions of the same book with different covers, etc. If the different releases have different promo material it's just triggering the same collector mindset that a lot of fandoms foster without getting grief from outsiders.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-25 03:53 am (UTC)(link)Although I do have two White Lotus shirts. One's a sweatshirt, though!
(WL fans, the Abercrombie collaboration is the BEST. This is the nicest fandom merch I have ever bought. Most HBO merch is garbage, but these are nice; embroidered text and logos, no "HBO" visible branding there to ruin it.
They fucked up Succession merch so badly. They are not serious people.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-25 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)I was a collector until a few years ago. I collected games, action figures, keychains, doujinshi and manga. Then I went to therapy.
It's not the same for anyone, obviously, but in my case I was collecting fandom merch (and not that much either) because I was trying to fit into the role I projected onto myself. Like, I'm a fan of X so I have to have X to "be happy". Now that my ego is stronger and I don't depend on external factor that much to determine myself (objects or other people's opinion of me) I let go of A LOT of "identities" and stuff tied to them.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-24 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)But I think secret OP isn’t really happy doing that and I would class them more a victim of FOMO than a collector.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-25 03:39 am (UTC)(link)I totally get it. FOMO has cost me a lot as a collector and a few years ago I had to stop buying the limited edition stuff because it had gotten out of hand. Every company (and TS as well as other business savvy entertainers) knows they can make a lot of money in a short time by releasing a limited run of something, ideally with multiple variants. They win, the scalpers win, and the collectors are often too busy scrambling for the next thing to even care about the one they just got. That’s how it was for me, anyway. And a lot of people in my community were in the same boat and started setting limits. Once I followed their example, I discovered I didn’t care anymore. I still buy the general release stuff sometimes but it’s impossible to be a completionist after sitting out once so all the stress and financial burden are gone.
If you’ve got the money and you enjoy collecting, go for it! If you don’t, then take a break. If the stuff is truly collectible, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to buy it on the second hand market. You may pay a bit more for it and you may not. Personally, I view the extra cost as a convenience fee and I’m ok with spending a little extra for skipping the stress and being able to buy when it’s convenient for me.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-25 09:23 am (UTC)(link)I've been burnt by the multiple variant thing and TTPD didn't click for me.
