I'm in the same boat. Only reason I didn't get all four of the CD releases is that they sold out. I'll wait for their next come around.

What can I say, I like extra material like photos and artist notes.

And don't take it hard from the commenters above me, acting like "gotta have every variant" isn't one of the most common fandom mindsets. They just don't want to admit TS fandom counts as something like Star Trek fandom or anime fandom.

Genuinely asking, since I don't know anything about it: what are the differences between the releases?

I think you make a good point in your last paragraph. Tons of fans have multiple figurines of the same character, or have multiple shirts for the same show, or versions of the same book with different covers, etc. If the different releases have different promo material it's just triggering the same collector mindset that a lot of fandoms foster without getting grief from outsiders.

Not who you asked but as someone who has bought most of the variants:

The standard editions

Orange vinyl - basic standard, has all songs, no extras
Orange CD - basic standard, w/fold-out poster
Orange cassette - basic standard, just cassette (there are not usually different variants of the cassettes, just the one, for those who collect them)

The variant CDs

Orange ver - 'Sweat & Vanilla Perfume' edition - Special orange glitter box, unique to edition photocards, purple-eye keychain
Red ver - 'It's Frightening' edition - Different cover, Special red glitter box, unique to edition photocards, red-heart wood keychain
Purple ver - 'It's Rapturous' edition - Different cover, Special purple glitter box, unique to edition photocards, love letter envelope golden necklace
Silver ver - 'It's Beautiful' edition - Different cover, Special silver glitter box, unique to edition photocards, silver charm bracelet

Vinyl variants

Purple ver - Shiny Bug edition in 'Shimmering Violet' - Different cover, purple shimmer vinyl, unique to edition photostrip, 'Shiny Bug' poem by Taylor
Wintergreen ver - Shiny Bug edition 'Wintergreen & Onyx' - Different cover, pale green (wintergreen) vinyl, unique to edition photostrip, 'Shiny Bug' poem by Taylor

Yellow ver - Baby, That's Show Business edition in 'Lovely Bouquet Golden' - Different cover, yellow splatter vinyl, unique to edition photostrip, 'Baby, That's Show Business' poem by Taylor
Blue ver - Baby, That's Show Business edition in 'Lakeside Beach Blue' - Different cover, dark blue sparkle vinyl, unique to edition photostrip, 'Baby, That's Show Business' poem by Taylor

As a cd/vinyl collector, y'all have no idea how the word “photocard” bothers me. I know that Taylor doesn't abuse it the way that it’s done in K-pop, but the idea is just…yuck…

I don't get why people do this, either.

Although I do have two White Lotus shirts. One's a sweatshirt, though!

(WL fans, the Abercrombie collaboration is the BEST. This is the nicest fandom merch I have ever bought. Most HBO merch is garbage, but these are nice; embroidered text and logos, no "HBO" visible branding there to ruin it.

They fucked up Succession merch so badly. They are not serious people.

Because we have a void in our hearts we can only fill with stuff.

^ THIS
I was a collector until a few years ago. I collected games, action figures, keychains, doujinshi and manga. Then I went to therapy.
It's not the same for anyone, obviously, but in my case I was collecting fandom merch (and not that much either) because I was trying to fit into the role I projected onto myself. Like, I'm a fan of X so I have to have X to "be happy". Now that my ego is stronger and I don't depend on external factor that much to determine myself (objects or other people's opinion of me) I let go of A LOT of "identities" and stuff tied to them.

Absolutely. That's what my overconsumption and shopping addiction problem is from. I am trying to fix something with stuff, and it doesn't work. But it feels good in the moment, so I keep doing it.

I’m a collector and author if the second comment. You’re right that collecting plays into it and is a valid and common fan activity. I honestly didn’t make the connection because I don’t collect fan merch and didn’t see the point in buying multiples of the same thing.

But I think secret OP isn’t really happy doing that and I would class them more a victim of FOMO than a collector.

Yeah. It's kind of true if I'm being honest. If she had released all of these items as just regular for-sale products being available on her store indefinitely, would I have bought ANY of them? No. I stream music on spotify 99% of the time anyway. I get into the mindset of "Oh no it won't last and if I don't buy it now I'll never get to have it" although truthfully I know there's a good chance that some of these will come back in stock, at least temporarily. It happened with TTPD anyway.

I totally get it. FOMO has cost me a lot as a collector and a few years ago I had to stop buying the limited edition stuff because it had gotten out of hand. Every company (and TS as well as other business savvy entertainers) knows they can make a lot of money in a short time by releasing a limited run of something, ideally with multiple variants. They win, the scalpers win, and the collectors are often too busy scrambling for the next thing to even care about the one they just got. That’s how it was for me, anyway. And a lot of people in my community were in the same boat and started setting limits. Once I followed their example, I discovered I didn’t care anymore. I still buy the general release stuff sometimes but it’s impossible to be a completionist after sitting out once so all the stress and financial burden are gone.

If you’ve got the money and you enjoy collecting, go for it! If you don’t, then take a break. If the stuff is truly collectible, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to buy it on the second hand market. You may pay a bit more for it and you may not. Personally, I view the extra cost as a convenience fee and I’m ok with spending a little extra for skipping the stress and being able to buy when it’s convenient for me.

I'm really torn. I want these, but I don't. What if I don't like the album? I don't want to resell them because that's a hassle and I don't want someone to try and scam me. FOMO gets me. I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

Taylor herself has said this album is upbeat pop, with infectious melodies. If that's your jam, you'll probably like it. If you're a folkmore/TTPD fan primarily, you might not. Everything else is up to you. Buy your fav cover and don't worry about the rest. It all has the same 12 songs on it.

I'm honestly streaming the album, then buying the standard edition when I know if I actually like the album.

I've been burnt by the multiple variant thing and TTPD didn't click for me.
