I always liked the fan theory that he had been trained hardcore about PR in the modern world and as soon as "Language" left his mouth he cringed internally so hard.

I also like the idea that the 'modern steve rogers' is nothing like himself because he's just on survival mode. One of my fave tropes back when I read MCU fic was Bucky coming back and being all "what the fuck are you on about?" and either telling everyone embarrassing/amazing Steve Rogers Is A Little Shit stories or Steve reverting to his natural state with someone who actually knows him around and everyone being shocked. Look, Captain America has a personality!

Yes to all this.

I love this take! Do you have any recs of this trope on hand?

(Anonymous) 2025-08-28 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, no. I know I read a lot of it but I didn't bookmark fic when I was in my MCU days and have no idea how I'd track any down. Maybe ask for recs in the general comments? We have some great regulars who rec all sorts of fic!

there's also the gender issue - men in the army would swear a blue streak, but it was much more taboo to swear in front of women/"mixed company"

and for steve, even though he knows it's not that women are delicate or whatever, but he probably sees it as a sign of respect and would feel reluctant to just ignore it. natasha, just like peggy, is a solider AND a woman. there's actual records of wwii soldiers being SUPER embarrassed and apologetic when they realized female radio techs could hear them cursing!

I love the idea of him doing that to troll people.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-27 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember once reading a Depressed Steve Rogers story where he was pretty numb and sad about the whole waking up in the future thing but he liked to get his little kicks by trolling the modern world in ways they wouldn't even know they were being trolled. Like inside jokes where he's the only one on the inside. "Language" is a perfect example. I always liked that and found it pretty funny.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-27 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Except he wouldn't call it trolling. He'd call it "busting your balls."

(Anonymous) 2025-08-28 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say he would...???

(Anonymous) 2025-08-28 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
DA I don't think they were correcting you, just adding to the conversation.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-27 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
imagining steve rogers going on tiktok and typing "k*ll"

(Anonymous) 2025-08-27 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)

nooo! not the sewer slide!

I kind of thought that maybe it was a reflexive thing after doing all those silly war bonds performances that he reverts to when he knows he's being scrutinized and feeling pressured to perform (in a different way from those performances but still).

I also don't think it would be implausible for him to use the crafted Captain America image as a cloak for uncertainty or as a tool to break tension.

Yup, I like this too. I love all the headcanons or theiries about this stuff.

Even in the late 70s, early 80s, guys in the military did not swear in front of females. My own grandfather, who would have been more Steve's father's generation, didn't swear period. And his sons, who were in the war, didn't swear in front of their sisters. Am I sure that Steve can swear like a sailor? Sure. Do I think that he had ideas about when swearing was inappropriate? Also sure.
