Little bit of both. I love reddit for general discussions but hate it for fandom. I can see how others would enjoy it, but reddit fandom is not for me.

It heavenly depends on the subreddits. Some subreddits are pretty chill and welcoming, great with meta and character discussions, some are heavily populated by "normies" and in those it's impossible to have a conversation with a minimum of depth. Or, heaven forbids, talk about ships.

Yeah, it really depends. There are good subreddits but there are also fucking awful ones, and if your fandom is dominated by one or more of those, good luck. Especially if it's a small fandom.

+1

it's only skill if your fandom has five subreddits and you can't figure out which one to follow for good discussion. otherwise it's sheer dumb luck if your fandom has one and it's full of shit.

Agreed. A lot of "it's just a show" comments on some, the same topics over and over. But I will agree there are some gems.

Depending on the fandom itself, I pretty much agree. For a good portion of the fandoms I'm into there's been good discussions and fanworks that I look in on (so good that I had recently gotten a reddit account right before the news about the UK's internet BS happened :') so I'm still figuring out how to work it).

There have been a few that had descended into either batshit wank or just drama I've slowly backed out of. But other than those, it's been mostly a pleasant experience - especially in my more music-based fandoms.

Some fandoms really are better than others but I also agree that it's pretty easy to find fun fandom spaces on there.

Honestly, the biggest issue I have is that depending on the fandom, it's a little like living in a timeloop.

gotta love same and same and same discussions

(Anonymous) 2025-08-29 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
what you say: skill issue

what you mean: all my fandoms have subreddits with reasonable moderation, expected social etiquette and good discussion

(Anonymous) 2025-08-29 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
It definitely depends on the fandom. The obvious subs for fandoms are really hit or miss and the larger the fandom, the worse they tend to be. But if you’re active on there or get some other friends together, you can find or create less obvious subs. I don’t know if that’s what you mean by it being a skill issue, but Reddit can be surprisingly complex due to social behavior rather than how the platform works.

Depends on the mods. Wrong person gets into power and the whole sub goes down the drain.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-29 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Hah, that's such a reddit thing to say! I love it.

Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-29 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on who runs the r/.

If it's by canon purists, you're fucked. If fans or haters of certain characters run it, you're fucked. If men run it, sometimes women, but not as often, you're fucked.

If the members are more chill than the mods in any of the above cases, you might not be as fucked...😒

Good luck!

Canon Purists do nothing wrong.

They certainly think so.

ayrt

That, I admit. Is true.

It depends heavily on the subreddit, but some of then really are good discussion spaces.
