Oh, that does sound like fun! I've never gotten into WoW myself, though it seems like something I'd enjoy, except I hate having to find new friends online and try to get our schedules to match :p.

Wait really? Isn't the whole point of a mmorpg the whole massive multiplayer part? Personally, I'm not a fan at all of multiplayer games, but that's why I don't play WoW.

The "MMO" part has long been the worst part of MMORPGs. What a lot of players actually want is a single-player game with both significant depth in character customization and an ongoing storyline that gets consistent updates over the course of several years, with the feedback loop of a live service game. And that... just doesn't really happen in single-player games nearly often enough, because it's less profitable and more work than just making sequels.

Luckily, I'm the sort that's satisfied by depth in characterization more than an unlimited storyline. Though that might be my horrible trait where I have an extremely hard time finishing anything, I remember getting to 50% of a game once and panicking the fuck outta there for months before going back. So I'm definitely an outlier.
It is interesting that single player games don't tend to have that though, the only live service game I play is Infinity Nikki, which is essentially single player (with buddy aspects), but doesn't have much RPG going for it.

atp i like wow in spite of it being online, not because. sad but true. there's lots you can do solo and i am old and tired and sick of dealing with random people. i don't have the energy to meet new people and make new friends. the game is still fun even if you play solo and they are making it better for solo players

This is complete news to me tbh. I honestly thought you had to team up with other players as a default, at least when dealing with bosses if not in general. Is there a setting to turn off multiplayer, or something?
The only real MMORPG I ever played was (very shortly) a Shin Megami Tensei game decades ago, and I remember some guy just basically babying me through a dungeon by basically just telling me to follow him out of no where. He was really nice, but I can't imagine it being so different in WoW that rando's won't just try and talk to you regardless.

Same OP. I used to skip the dungeons whilst levelling and go back to them once I was a high enough level that I could solo them, so being able to have an NPC party is great!
