Some countries are just not good

(Anonymous) 2025-08-31 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
The travel subreddit always has a bad habit of shutting down any discussion of unsafe cities and countries. If a woman or gay person talks about how unsafe they feel in India or Saudi Arabia, it is frozen. It is so annoying

It is infinitely puzzling to me that political groups with pro-feminist and pro-LGBT stances are so bizarrely protective of cultures that are anti- both of those things. Yes.

100%!

If I had to guess, I'd say the mods probably do so to cut down on threads that quickly get racist, etc. but... yeah, such discussions need to take place and they're not doing that country or culture any favors by shutting down these conversations. Modding such discussions would be a real PITA, but that's why communities have moderators in the first place.

Re: Some countries are just not good

(Anonymous) 2025-08-31 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Those mods would probably disagree on what exactly counts as racist though, considering some people view any criticism of a non-white country as automatically racist.

(Anonymous) 2025-08-31 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, those discussions should happen. But generally it is better when they come from people from that country/culture rather than from western people who almost always end up sounding racist and a bit "white savior."

The west isn't doing so great on LGBT rights right now, either, so we're not really ones to talk. At least, the US and UK aren't.

How's UK failing? Gay spouses have all the rights.

How about trans ones?

As the above commenter said trans people are in the process of being erased from existing in public at all given all the stupid bathroom shit we’re having to mess with now, and we have some absolute far right nut jobs who will 100% take away the gay rights we do have if they ever get into power given that this pride month several councils run by those fuckwits refused to put any pride flags up at all.

We are heading down a dangerous slope.

The county council in Kent has removed all transgender-related books from the children's sections of its libraries. In a post on social media, the Reform UK leader of the council said the books were removed immediately in a "victory for common sense in Kent".

Reform UK hates transgender people.

"The west isn't doing so great on LGBT rights right now, either, so we're not really ones to talk. At least, the US and UK aren't.'

I'd agree if westerners were just generally and randomly criticizing other countries, but the context matters here. If a white person from the U.S. wants to ask about the potential safety issues re: a solo female traveler in India, then they need to hear from other white, female solo travelers who've been to India. It's not a contest about who's blameless and can therefore point fingers at other countries for racism, etc. It's about soliciting someone's personal experience as a traveler in another country so you can get a feel for what your experience might be like.

Oh, do they also routinely push LGBT folks from buildings or hang them from cranes? Must've missed that.

How about unsafe New York and ghettos? Generalisations is a slippery slope. Coming into other countries and being disrespectful is a no brainer fro westerners that have their own problems at home. It's just a way for them to feel superior forgetting how little France pays for Afrikan resources or for how long UK pumped out everything from its colonies.

It is very, very, very common for people to give you areas to avoid when traveling in the US (tenderloin add an example).

DA - yes but they don't say don't visit the US as a whole. (Though tbf some people are saying that these days.)

Maybe not the USA as a whole... but specific states as a whole, definitely.

Re: Some countries are just not good

(Anonymous) 2025-09-01 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Clickbait subject line? Because countries are not good or bad, they can be safe or unsafe due to politics (or weather etc) at a specific time, but that changes.

I do agree that there are certain cities and countries that are only safe for certain demographics and people should be aware of that when they are planning their travel. But it is also true that racists and sexists and alarmists live to jump on amd say certain places are unsafe or filled with criminals etc.

Re: Some countries are just not good

(Anonymous) 2025-09-01 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's not racist to say a lot of, for example, majority Muslim countries are bad for LGBT people and women to travel in (alone). They just are.

Re: Some countries are just not good

(Anonymous) 2025-09-01 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
And the US is really unsafe for Muslim travelers and Arabic and Hispanic travelers in general right now.

I saw this after coming to FS to complain how US Americans think everyone has to know all about their pop culture after seeing a lot of people comment “you’re joking right” when someone asked what was wrong about a picture of Sabrina Carpenter by a car in a green wig and I still don’t know what is wrong about it

Re: Some countries are just not good

idk what's up with that.

Re: Some countries are just not good

Look at the laws, that is reason enough. Obviously a country where being gay is criminalized you should not be traveling with your same sex spouse, or if you are presenting as 'illegal' to their laws or beliefs. Same with being a woman, there is plenty of warning to not travel alone as a woman in many countries, it's similarly well advertised. No one woman is thinking about going to Iraq in booty shorts and a bra and be dumb enough not to know the cultural offense they'd be committing.

The posts get frozen because people like to bitch and complain, and pretend in some cases, that a waiter mixing up a meal is criminal intent. Most of it is obvious and stated in a countries law or character, and some people can't fathom why they should wear sleeves or pants in the vatican, or not wear a speedo to the beach.
They get frozen because it's redundant. Ntm, you can go to any reasonable countries government page and see real travel advisories, in real time, with all the necessary precautions. Reddit is not the place to go when looking for legit info.

reddit is shit for any abjective info or news due to the admins, subreddit mods and the voting system.
