Being aware that you're sort of on probation even if you're not officially on probation, so presenting your best professional self is important. Observing office culture and reading the room carefully so you can get along with your colleagues as just as important as doing a good job with the technical stuff. One of the best pieces of general career advice I've ever heard was this:

1) If you're really, really good at what you, you can get away with more BS, having a difficult personality, etc. But if you're not a genius prodigy, then

2) Be on time and reliable.
3) Be easy to work with and nice.

Because people will forgive a lot of mistakes and lack of knowledge if #2 and #3 are on point.

Thanks. And I'm pretty sure no one is a genius prodigy at immigration law given how often it changes. Like new law on friday last week.
