Aww, I feel that. It's a long fic. Is there a chance the reader just took a break and will come back to it?

ngl though this is why I don't leave comments on chapterfic until I've read the whole thing. Or unless I *really* trust the author.

HOnestly, speaking as a reader, I only usually leave 1-2 reviews per fic. I don't tend to do more reviews on that. It doesn't mean they didn't keep reading.

Dude, we all have that fic (or several!). It's a learning process, and we all hope we got better/grew out of some things.
But despite the lack of ongoing comments (so many reasons they stopped), someone out there is RIGHT NOW reading and loving that fic.
Trust me.
If you really can't deal with it being out there as 'yours', just orphan it, don't delete. Someone will be sad, and really, in the grand scheme of things, it's not the worst thing to ever have done in your life.

Every story has someone who absolutely loves it. You have proof of that, regardless of whether they continued to comment. Let people love your stories, flaws and all. Trying to curate your online existence to perfection is a fool's game.

Felt. Over the past few months I've started writing for a fairly popular pairing in a relatively small fandom but there's some crossover with my other fandom I've published on AO3 (as in, people like the same character as me) and it means my fics from 10+ years ago are getting attention again. I too have struggled with this "but I'm more refined now and this is bad!" feelings.

It's your fic and you absolutely have the right to delete it. Probably best to keep a copy for yourself so you can see how far you've come. But you don't owe your "readers" anything.

No, you're wrong. This has actually happened to me. I left absolutely adoring comments of three of, to this day, my absolute favourite writer for said fandom. They even published a story somewhat recently. But those three stories specifically got orphaned a very short time afterward, and it absolutely broke my heart. They never updated their recent stories and eventually abandoned them all.
and fuck if my own device isn't against me because I've had this whole comment written twice already and its deleted it both times. I mean, how poetic, I guess.
I tried very hard not to blame myself, but the timing was too perfect and reading this now I know there are people who feel this way. And it's not a good feeling at all to know that my love is the cause for the embarrassment and disgust of others. I hate it, and I hate that you're using someones enjoyment as an excuse to delete something they enjoyed, more so even that you're lying to yourself about it.
I have extreme anxiety, I tell myself every time I read a longfic that I'll finish it no matter what. But I very rarely do, my thoughts can't help but tell myself that this is good enough, that I don't deserve it, that things will far apart if I read anymore. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way, and most of the time it's my own trickery that gets the better of me, I take a break to get all the noise out of my head, I'll stop for a day or two just to try and form the words on how much I appreciate how much any sort of story means to me, but those breaks on,y lead to more anxiety, more helplessness, and ultimately an inability to do anything more at all. The more I love a story the less likely I am to finish it, and it's on no fault of the authors to know any different, but to say a complement is any sort of directive of disappointment is a damned lie that even you know better than to make.

Sorry this isn't more concise, I wrote it so much better the first time, I only hope my message gets across regardless.

I'm fine with subathons or subgoals, as that is something where it's clear what it is that the viewers are paying for. But bits or random donations or money, especially when the streamer specifically asks for them, are really weird for me too.

Can you explain what kinds of fandom snobbery you’re talking about? I mean, any examples of comments, real or hypothetical?

I know there used to be occasional “how/why is this fandom?” comments under certain secrets, but I haven’t seen one of those for a while.

I do see people assuming that their corner or version of fandom is the only/main/default one. But I think a lot of that is genuine ignorance with a bit of bog-standard personal bias.
