I think Fandom has become full of people who enjoy "being in Fandoms" or the idea of Fandom more than enjoying what you're supposedly a Fan of.

People have ideas about tropes they want to see, but instead of engaging with works that do those, they grab characters from popular shows and fic their way into those tropes with these characters, even if they don't fit at all.

And the quality and lack of any real discussions or engagement reflect that.
