For something like animal cruelty, that's a given. Add it in, it's like not tagging rape. It can be incredibly traumatic to come across without warning. You should give at least some benefit of the doubt that they're just being triggered rather than call them rude just because you want to be the defining asshole in this scenario.

OP of the secret here. No actual animal cruelty happens on screen in the story. It was a character that mentioned in a one off sentence that they knew someone who microwaved a hamster for fun. That's it. There were no gruesome details described. It never gets mentioned in the story again. That's why I forgot to tag animal cruelty.
Also the person who commented on the fic was cursing me out and told me to kill myself.

Okay, I'm very sensitive to the subject and can be upset at it being mentioned in a fic, I'm just easily upset by it, but that reaction was way out of line. I don't really expect a tag on a brief mention, I know I can come across brief mentions of all kinds of upsetting topics when I read stories. So I just go in prepared to deal with it if something that bothers me comes up.

Warning for a mention is a bit over the top for me as a request. The warning mentions the topic too, will they want a warning for the warning? Lol.

Okay, that's a bit different then. The person who told you to add the tag was way out of line.
I've come across fics that did a lot worse than that, but only once did I ask for someone to add a tag, which I unfortunately I asked to add the 'animal death' tag, which they did, though 'hunting' was a more accurate tag. I've never asked again because I felt bad about possibly removing readers from a really great fic. I've seen so much worse, and it's honestly made me sick, but to curse someone out let alone say to kill yourself is beyond horrible. I'm sorry they said that, honestly.

The incident you mentioned is very triggering though. I understand not adding a tag, personally I wouldn't do it myself. But I would add a warning for the chapter, even in the post-notes if not at the beginning. (the check notes for additional warnings add at the beginning to prevent spoilers and/or an extended initial note)
I know I wasn't pleasant at first, so I see why you wouldn't, but would you consider adding a warning for your fic? Just a note for said chapter? If only because I know I would be triggered by such a subject, and I don't wish that for anyone else.

Not OP but I have to say that it has never once occurred to me to treat or tag violence happening to animals any differently than violence happening to humans, and I especially would not consider it to be anywhere near approaching the level of rape in terms of stuff that needs a specific warning. Is this really a big deal to people? I'm honestly curious.

I appreciate a specific warning for it if it's like, graphic. I consider it courteous to warn for but I don't expect everyone to tag for it separately, so I keep in mind it might be unmarked. I don't really have an opinion on how it ranks among other common triggers. I definitely would warn for it myself if it was a detailed description in a fic.

Oh yeah, I give warnings for any sort of graphic violence so I always figured that would be fine if it ever came up but people in this thread are making it sound like that isn't the case, which is why I was curious.

I think without the specification, "violence" implies human characters, at least in my own assumptions from a TW, so animal cruelty might catch readers off guard without additional warnings.

You'd never consider treating violence to animals any different than from humans? Or is there another negative in that? Sorry, I just want to make sure I understand. It's been a long day.

I compare it to rape because every trigger deserves its respect. Yes, cruelty to animals is huge. Most every person does not want to see an animal being abused, especially in great detail. But it's still used fairly often, even if not as commonly as before. The whole doesthedogdie site exists for a reason. And it definitely deserves a warning beyond a shadow of a doubt.

I mean in the sense that I would tag violence happening to humans OR animals with "Graphic violence" and that I wouldn't distinguish between the violence happening to humans versus to animals because I figure that someone who doesn't want to read about graphic violence doesn't want to read about ANY graphic violence.

It's actually very common for people to be more bothered by one or the other for whatever personal reasons so I warn separately. It's not always a rational or logical thing when it comes to triggers.

Same. I had a fic tagged with "graphic depictions of violence" and someone got upset at me for a chapter that involved a character killing a mouse-like fantasy creature (in a not particularly graphic way compared to other things in the story, the POV character only heard it happen) which I should have tagged for. I was like uh. I thought graphic depictions of violence already covered that.
