Anyone thinking about Halloween yet?

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2025-09-28 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)

I know it's a little early, but anyone considering dressing up or decorating?

I haven't done either in about a decade, but maybe this is the year I try to do something again. Nothing too elaborate, just a little prop-and-makeup thing and going to the local parade.

I am going on a group backpacking trip that weekend! We plan to have a fire and smores and spooky stories and some of us are toying with dressing up for the hike. But it's spot where you have to carry in all the water and everything so might not be worth the fun for the extra pounds/space a costume would take up. Maybe just fun hats? We shall see!

We don't get much in the way of Halloween stuff where I live, but I do have a poke around online, and I check in with some of the bargain shops where I am to see if they have anything fun.

I usually go all out for Halloween but this year I’m recovering from surgery so won’t be able to decorate.

I have decorations I put on my desk, but I don't know yet what new office situation is. We shall see.

The person who is 'in charge' of the house I mainly work in (we call them Lead Staff) has the house all decorated up, with a black-painted xmas tree covered in skeletons and spiders and things, purple twinkle lights, etc. Just added Halloween-themed throws to the couches. A party is planned, costumes, and possibly a haunted house. The ladies are very excited. I may wear my witch hat (as an overnight person 9 nights out of of 10, I don't participate in a lot of stuff).
At my house...I'm not doing anything yet, but am contemplating a jack-o-lantern. We'll see. :D

Actually thinking I'll decorate next week and get it out of the way, that way I can enjoy Halloween all month long.

I'm vending at a local maker's market Halloween show so yeah, I have to think about it. I don't usually carry Halloween-specific items so I'm rushing to sew up some cute hats with orange and black decorations.

I’m out in the country so we don’t get trick or treaters and I don’t decorate the outside of the house. I have a few fall themed decorations I put around the house for my own enjoyment.

Sure, I am. Don't know of any parties yet though.

Forums

(Anonymous) 2025-09-28 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I miss them. Do any of you still have any that are still active? I know there are a few out there.

I just found out ProBoards is still around to make free forums with, that was a blast from the past for me. I remember using them to make a small guild forum for one of the games I was active in years ago.

I poked my head in on The Straight Dope forums recently and they seem like they’re still going, if a bit quieter than they used to be. I mostly only lurked there, but I remember there were some fun and in-depth conversations on all kinds of topics.

Melonland is the only active one I know of, but I haven't posted on it much myself in several months. Side7 also has a forum, but it's pretty quiet. Anything else tends to be devoted to niche subject I'm not involved in. GBAtemp is one, but I fell out of console modding and don't play video games anymore.

Some fansites have forums that are still online, but their Discords seem to be more active. Serenes Forest, Serebii, Bulbagarden, etc... A part of me feels like forums are overrated because I had toxic experiences on them, but communicating via social media or Discord is not remotely the same. It's almost worst. (I like Discord, ftr, it's just hard to vet servers before jumping in...)

Only one I'm in at the moment is a work-related one. The immigration lawyers association has a forum.

yeah, the RPF (Replica Props Forum) is still going strong, and is still the first place I check if I have a new costume challenge I can't solve just in case someone else has already solved it, like seeing a seam I can't find when they saw a screen-used costume in an exhibit.

Yes! The Asexuality forums for me and a few niche fandom ones (DoA for bjd etc) I check at times. I meant to check Melonland and a rpf one but have yet to make an account. love these

Reminder: "Secrets you don't want to make..." thread is still open!

What are you watching/listening to?

(Anonymous) 2025-09-28 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I just finished The Residence (thank you yesterday's secret OP for reminding me I was watching that! I, too, love Cordelia Cupp).

I'm watching Outlander, currently on season 2. I'm still debating with myself on how I think about it: genius? trashy romance? appalling self-serving writing about shallow politics with horrible plot holes? romanticising/sexualising rape? great and well constructed character arcs? trauma porn?
I have no idea, but I'm fucking loving it. I don't think it's "great tv" but goddamn did i need something like it in this awful period of my life.
I am finding the France arc of season 2 mid at best, but I'm still enjoying myself immensely. Can't wait for them to go back to Scotland, though.

Taskmaster new season. I don't mind the comedians but the tasks are not doing it for me this season. I'm finding a lot of them gross and having to skip, which is new for me with this show.

I tried to watch Andor but my "can't watch more than three episodes of a show" kicked in already.

Alien: Earth

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2025-09-28 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)

Just watched the last episode of Alien: Earth.

There was a lot I liked, but it really didn’t feel like the end of a season. A few things seemed to be rushed and some of what I think were supposed to be “oooh, cool!” moments didn’t quite hit that note.

Still, I’m glad I watched it and I’ll look forward to a second season.

Also I've managed to fall into youtube D&D campaign, not one of the big ones though.
