As a short-term solution, maybe you could change your phone's ringtones, so you can maybe separate your responses. I don't know how much it will help though, every time I hear an alarm on TV or wherever that sounds like the one I used to have to wake up for school, it's panic-inducing (and I have been out of school for decades). Also, if all radio ads and songs for the radio could NOT have any siren sounds in them, that would be great.

Re: sirens in songs

Yeah, one of my favorite bands has a song I enjoy but in the background at a couple points are sirens and for a while when I was driving I'd be like, "....is there a cop behind me???". Now I know at what point it's going to happen and exactly what it sounds like so the reaction isn't as visceral but still!

I also made the mistake(?) of making a different song I like actually be my alarm to wake up and now I can't listen to it without thinking about how I have to go somewhere even when I don't need to. 😅

I second this. I had such a startle response to that buzzing alarm-clock sound that was so popular 10-20 years ago it was uncomfortable. Now I've changed the "get up" alarm sound on my phone and have different alarm tones for "remember this appointment" and "start going to bed" and I change them frequently.

Also, being on call *sucks*

No, you're right. Changing the ringtone helps immensely.

I would change your work phone alarm. I feel this, though. I hate being on call too.

The jobs I had that ended with the workday were GOLDEN. I didn't even care what shift I worked as long as nobody bothered me at home.
