I have fond memories of the Dragon Prince and Dragon Star trilogies from my teenage years. They were some of the first big epic fantasies (with dragons!) that I read and loved. The Exiles trilogy didn't grab me as much, but I was disappointed when Rawn didn't publish Captal's Tower. I understand she had a lot of mental health issues going on? Don't know for sure, tbh.

And I couldn't get into the Glass Thorns series at all.

I hope this doesn’t come across as smug, but this is one of those feelings that I’m really grateful that I don’t have. It actually took me a while to realize that other people really are that emotionally invested in things in a way that either not having an ending or having a bad ending makes them wish they’d never started it at all. That’s so different from how I feel that I just couldn’t quite wrap my head around it for a bit. I get very attached and invested too, but if I enjoyed the first part, I’m still glad I got to experience it, even if it’s never finished or finishes in a way I don’t like.

Same. I've been disappointed by an unfinished series or unsatisfying ending and yeah, that sucks. But I've also been a consumer of media for quite some time and frankly, this happens a lot. It's just one of those unfortunate things in life.

That's how it feels to me. But I'm coming to believe that some other people just don't get used to it. I think it must hit them harder.

Personally, I prefer no ending to bad ending. If I get the bad ending, sometimes I can ignore it. But sometimes, the bad ending does its best to fuck up everything that came before while also being reasonably well executed. And that makes it hard to enjoy the previous stuff because "well, actually, that was all just leading up to this stupid thing" gets stuck in my head.

Yeah, I definitely get that. Bad endings are more likely to "stick" in my head too. Sometimes it takes me a bit of time to mentally process and reject them so I can feel positively about the first part of the story again.

I can't with WiP, be that published or fic.

The exception being books that stand on their own but continue on in a series. Like the book wraps up stuff, but whatever series might come later just is in the same world or opens up new avenues and just builds on what was there. I just hate cliffhangers or openended mysteries in ongoing series.

Yes! I filter through a lot of WIPs
Also series are okay on their own and I do love a good hook into the next story. But genuine cliffhanger? Nope

It's been my rule for ages. I don't start tv/movies/book/game series until they're completely done and most people agree it was a good ending. Sure, I miss out on the heyday of the fandom, but my brain will absolutely ruin the whole thing for me if the ending is shit.

I do this too, with both published fiction and fanfic... and honestly, all the guilt-tripping "you're the reason so many 'great' WIPs die due to lack of engagement" Tumblr posts just make me all the more convinced that avoiding said WIPs is 100% the right call.

I look for new fantasy books at the library a lot, and it’s a graveyard of “book 1”s where the book 2 and book 3 never arrive.

I totally get it. It really sucks. I also often won't start reading fics online until they're complete, I'm sorry, but I hate getting partway through and then it is never updated again.
