I’ve been a fan since 2006. Love that they’re having a revival. But if I see someone who looks to be under 30 out & about wearing MCR merch, I generally will avoid interacting with that person.

The majority of the fandom that I’ve seen & experienced since they came back has been so very terrible. I don’t want or need that in my life.

Especially how fuckin weird people are about Gerard now. They were always weird about him but the level of psychosexual fixation and intense personal projection I’m seeing now is a whole new level of creepy.

As someone who is 40 and has been into MCR since hte beginning like...wtf are you talking about. Yeah there are weirdos but there are weirdos in all age brackets. So many new people found their music after their breakup and getting to be in spaces where we are all enjoying them touring, has been amazing. Across age ranges.

Also re: Gerard? People have always been fucking weird about him. Maybe it just was less visible if you weren't super online back when they were popular pre-breakup but everything you are complaining about happened back then just in different flavors.

I'd rather be friends with the fandom ppl now than be friends with someone like you tbh.

Worse than back in the day? Wow. Can you give some examples? I wasn't a fan from the very beginning, but got into MCR between Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge and The Black Parade, so I was lucky enough to see TBP in concert the first time around. I wasn't involved in bandom, however, but... I heard stories.

If I see someone in an MCR shirt and they’re just a stranger passing by, I’ll just compliment their shirt, but if the person is next to me in line for a concert, I’ll probably start a conversation ‘cause I freaking love MCR. I’ve been a fan since 2007 and the fandom’s always had its share of weirdos. Remember how the guys had to ask fans to please stop sending them their slash fics? And I’m sure there was weirder stuff too.

I'm a casual MCR fan, but what are you talking about? One of the reasons I never got into the fandom side was that people were so fucking weird about Gerard. SO WEIRD!

Never been into MCR (was always into FOB so always in the adjacent lane, though) and I have to say I kind of agree. MCR fans have always been weird about Gerard Way but I think gen Zs are weirder. Not their fault, the web has gotten even weirder and so have people on the web. I remember when 4chan was the hell of the web. Nowadays there are mainstream websites far worse than that unfortunately but yeah that's what usually happens with each generation in a decadent society the weirdos get weirder. I get not wanting to interact with fans of your fav band if they're all parasocial and sexualize tf out of the members and barely listen to the songs when you like them first and foremost for the songs lol.

(SA - but 30? I don't know, I think 30yos may have been OGs. 30yos were 13 when Black Parade came out, right? They're the OG weirdos, not the gen Z weirdos. But yes. MCR fandom just got more and more weird I suppose)

The way FOB is about Pete and Patrick tbh isnt much better, across the eras, same as MCR.
