OK OP I need to know the reasoning. I'm not judging I'm just curious.

I am not a fan of reading about female bodies/sex (dysphoria reasons) but I adore the pairing.

I do understand why it's not a popular trope, but this was just a chat between friends not like I was crusading for m/m xena/gabrielle!

now see, this is very important. It's also unfortunate, because some people really wouldn't understand. there are comments further down that touch on this, too - that it was such a protect lesbian rep ship that changing it for any reason would have felt like betrayal to some people. But if your reason is dysphoria/dysmorphia, you can't help it. But you can explain till you're blue in the face and some people still won't accept it. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. So yeah, it's sad that a friendship had to end but that's life, sadly.

Transcript:

Someone called me a misogynist because I said I wanted to read gender flipped Xena/Gabrielle fic. I tried to explain my reasoning but they doubled down and now we are no longer friends. This happened years ago but I still think about it sometimes.

That's silly, it's not like your fic idea would make them into guys on the show.

Some people like to argue that if you don't read f/f then you're a misogynist. Those people are dumb.

A lot of people get really attached to the things that they like and/or feel, and don't know how to deal with other people disliking them, or liking them but in a different way, or having a different set of feelings about the same thing, or in general just having a different experience. It feels so intensely uncomfortable that they think it must be outright wrong, on a transcendent level. Combine that with the human need to view oneself as "good," and you have someone who feels as though they must seek moral language to describe what's actually no more than a difference in perspective and/or preferences.

I'm sorry you lost a friend over something like this.

This. I also think there was a certain degree of viewing the ship as support for LBGQT+ relationships back in the day and some people felt really strongly about that... so anything that differed from that viewpoint felt like a homophobic attack when it was just plain ol' personal preferences like it is for any other fandom/pairing.

I wouldn't mind reading a genderbent version of this show, it would change things if Xena and Gabrielle were guys and that would have been interesting!

(Anonymous) 2025-10-07 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, are you saying it would have been interesting if the show were two guys?

I'm saying the show would have been different if it were two guys. I liked watching Xena, it was a lot of fun. What I was saying I'd like to read fan fiction where the characters are guys to see how the world would change if the main characters were men instead of women.

I'm not sure I'd like it if they rebooted and cast the two main characters as guys...They had the Hercules show for that (I for some reason did not like Hercules at all).

I'm the OP and I'd be pissed if they rebooted and cast two guys! Some things are interesting or desired in fic that you don't actually want in the show.

Same! Fan fiction is where you explore the what-ifs in my opinion.

p.s. In my post I said "reading" not watching.
