things you are surprised do have a large fandom?

[personal profile] philstar22 2025-10-20 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Opposite of other thread. Are there things you are surprised are as popular as they are or have the fandom size they do?

I loved the Legend of The Seeker fandom. But I was always shocked at how big and active that fandom was.

Inception. It was an enjoyable movie but it was one of the least shippy things I have ever watched at yet the fandom was massive for a while.

Was it mostly on Ao3 and tumblr? I would've totally joined that fandom, but it was crickets wherever I looked.

NAYRT but there was a good amount on LJ, the only fandom place I hung out at the time. I was primarily into anime fandoms and it seemed like half the writers I followed started posting Arthur/Eames overnight.

Some of the more influential writers were writing it, is why, I think?

Overlap with the hockey RPF BNFS.

It was Lj where the massive output was and trust me when I say it was huge, like it felt like almost everyone started writing for it overnight. Which again: baffles me as the movie is so far removed from what I’d usually expect to grip fandom.

Yes. It baffled me at the time when all of my LJ friends started writing Arthur/Eames fic out of seemingly nowhere. One chair tip launched an entire fandom.

And it was huuuuuge in LJRP, to the point a lot of people playing them were still playing them when it migrated here to DW. No one has ever understood it.

Inception was one of the "barring a couple" I was talking about. So much output.

Oh wow! I never would have guessed that. Very interesting.

Schitt's Creek was big for a long time (now, not so much) which surprised me as comedies usually don't have much of a fandom. I think having a well-written queer pairing helped a lot.

I was morbidly fascinated by the sizeable fandom for the Onceler in the Lorax movie. That was one hell of a fever dream.

I was honestly surprised that Sherlock blew up as much as it did, and I say this as a Sherlock Holmes fan. The first season was promising, and stylish. But IMO, the series never fulfilled that potential and when it went south, booooy did it go south. But then, I don't ship this version of Holmes and Watson at all so that's not a big draw for me.

It was witty, had handsome leads, and showed up when Tumblr was at it's peak.

Oh that one never shocked me, I don’t ship any iteration of Watson/Holmes but this series went absolutely nuts with the drama and Intense Emotions that I wasn’t surprised it got a massive fandom.

A bit shit but with lots of room for fanfic is catnip to a good chunk of fandom and this show fit the bill for that.

I feel like when a piece of media gets a LOT of people shipping a particular pairing very hard in its early days, it basically becomes an unstoppable juggernaut, and takes numerous years and numerous instances of shitting the bed for it to actually burn out.

Johnlock was my main OTP from early 2012 to 2019, and that was despite the fact that I thought everything after S2 was atrocious. 3x01 came out in January of 2014, and I continued shipping Johnlock until like March of 2019, so like five years. Because I still loved Johnlock the way people in fandom were writing it. I still loved it the way it existed in my head. And there was still an absolute flood of fanfic and fanart being created for it, to keep me engaged.

Would it have been nice if I still liked canon? Yeah, definitely. It was unquestionably a bummer being totally estranged from canon from 3x01 onward. But it's not like I'd ever expected Johnlock to be canon in the first place, and Johnlock was what I was fannish about, so it wasn't really that hard to just shrug off canon and go, "Oh well, this is why we make our own fun."

South Park. It isn't a fandom I'm in but I'm always shocked when it shows up someplace. It is a vulgar cartoon mostly about kids.

MLP shocked me when it exploded. I would not have predicted that at all at the time.

MLP was the first thing that came to my mind as well.

There’s certain media and hobbies that I enjoyed as a kid, 20ish years ago, that weren’t so popular then but now have huge followings of teens. It’s always a surprise to come across one of these and go “wow, you guys like it! Understandable, it’s good. … So would you agree my childhood friends didn’t know 💩 as it stood the test of time”

I'm surprised Sailor Moon has withstood the test of time. When I became a fan, it looked like the fandom was dying its last gasping breaths as everyone who liked it suddenly discovered other anime existed. I made a secret about this a few years ago. I still have intense schadenfreude about all those former fans being wrong that nobody would remember Sailor Moon in a few years because Fushigi Yugi was way better.
