I don't get people who say "I hate anime". Anime is an animation style that encompasses many different genres. I am not a fan of the stereotypical tropey/fanservicey anime with bug-eyed characters. But even I have found some gems of anime that i like such as: Full metal alchemist, studio ghibli films (Miyazaki is a god among men), cowboy bebop, grave of the fireflies, Berserk, Mononoke, Devilman and Death Note. Also Ghost in the shell.

I've seen a couple of anime offerings. Kids stuff I don't mind. But overall the art style, the Asian culture or storytelling or whatever you want to call it, it doesn't work for me. It also doesn't feel 'real' and I'm not interested in the fandom side because of that. Same goes for American stuff like Lower Decks; the overall approach is shrill and weird.

I don't like anime.

But when I say that, people like OP are like "you're just an oblivious noob and haven't watched all the ones I personally like, which will blow your mind and prove you wrong!" because they think I mean "I don't like anime tropes" or "I think all anime is the same" when that's not what I said.

"But anon, anime is just a medium!" to which I say, yes, exactly, I dislike the medium itself. Even when experiencing the same stories I prefer manga/live-action versions any day and if one isn't available I just pass on it.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-21 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, thank you!

In the same way as I don't like opera - it's a way of telling stories that generally doesn't do it for me. There are some edge cases of unusual examples where the things I like can be enough for me to stick with it, but it's very rare and I'd still prefer it if the story was rendered in a different format.

OP of the secret here. I didn't mean to call anybody an oblivious noob. Sorry. I was just kind of confused when people say they dislike an entire varied medium. I mean a part of me thought that people who say they don't like anime either disliked common anime tropes or they simply dislike the stereotypical anime art style.

How do you feel about western Animation?

(Anonymous) 2025-10-21 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of with you in that I don't generally like/am not drawn to anime but have enjoyed a few specific examples, but having said that, you did describe it as an "animation style" which is something that I think people could easily dislike as a whole, no?

(Anonymous) 2025-10-22 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't anime more of a medium ? It literally just animation from Japan.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-21 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
*flashbacks to when my art teacher berated me and said anime wasn't art and then went on to praise a friend who drew in a similar style, back in the late 90s/early 2000s*

yeah haha funny that

(Anonymous) 2025-10-21 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care for anime either. I don't have any strong feelings about it, though.

I can't get into fandoms/shipping etc. for properties without real flesh people/actors, and animation doesn't do it for me. Characters from novels are okay, though.

Just think it's something in my brain that doesn't translate animated characters into real people and not 2-d.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-22 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you feel about CGI films/series?

(Anonymous) 2025-10-21 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It’s perfectly valid to not like a medium. Just because you have found things you like doesn’t mean everyone else will or is required to give every single thing a try until they find something they like.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-22 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody ever said not liking a medium wasn't valid. Nobody said that anybody is required to give every single thing a try until they find something they like either.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-22 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I'd find it just as weird if someone said they didn't like, IDK, American movies. Like, out of all of the countless genres and storytelling/cinematography styles that are present in that medium, you really don't like a single one? You don't like action? Suspense? Comedy? Sci-fi? Horror? War epics? Fantasy? Romance? It just seems totally bizarre to me that someone can make a claim like that.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-22 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I find it bizarre that you’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like American movies for one reason or another. Too long to sit through, too short to get invested in, too loud/bright/dark/something else, doesn’t care for the commercialism in big studio films or the stereotypical low-budget look and pretension of indie films? Literally everyone you know loves American movies? Weird.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-22 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are some absolutely wild generalizations you're making there. You do realize that there are multiple thousands of American movies out there that aren't any of those things, right?

(Anonymous) 2025-10-21 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Some people just don’t vibe with the medium. The Apothecary Diaries is a show my mom would love because it has so many tropes she likes, but she just can’t get into it because it’s animated.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-22 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I sorta get what you mean. If someone doesn't like the medium that's understandable but I also see a lot of people saying 'I don't like anime, it's all filled with fanservice of underage girls and neverending training montages.' Maybe try watching something not made for teenage boys? I don't mind if someone just doesn't click with the style but I roll my eyes when they say they don't like anime and it's clear all they've ever watched is Shounen Jump stuff.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-22 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
This. idgaf if you just don't like the style or the tropes or can't do animation of any kind, whatever, totally cool. It's the people who have to qualify their opinion with reasons that make them out to have better tastes than anime-likers that usually get the pushback. you don't have to justify it, and you definitely don't have to justify it by getting snooty about how your tastes are better than mine (vague general "you" of course). come at me with a poorly-informed hot take on why your opinion is better than mine and of course I'm going to knee-jerk attempt to provide examples that go against those hot claims.

I think it's directly parallel to people who "don't like rap" and turn out to only know gangsta rap.

I'm thankful for the transcript because I cannot read this secret raw.

It's the same way anyone doesn't like a category of things. I don't like alcohol and there are many, many different types of alcohol, but they do all have something in common that I do not like. There's always this weird whataboutism that happens, though. Yes, it's possible if I try a thousand different types of alcoholic drinks, I'll find a few I like, but I am perfectly okay not trying a bunch of things I'm going to dislike, just to find ones that I do.

At some point, it is okay for a person to decide they don't like a category based on the items you have already experienced from it. Maybe they would find a bunch of things that they liked if they gave it more of a chance, but that shouldn't matter to anyone else. Now, if they've decided that they dislike a category based on some misunderstanding or misinformation, it's fine to point that out (though they may just be using that as an excuse because they don't want to say why they actually don't like it).

Anime is not even an "animation style", it's just animation FROM JAPAN. So I don't care if people simply say "I don't like animation show" in general, being from western or eastern countries. It's OK, you're not interested in that form of art, but liking American animated shows/movies and vocally disliking "anime"? That will make me side eye the person. (Same with people who are really into anime and say they dislike ALL western shows, though they seem to be far less)
It's like me saying I love movies, but NEVER chinese or japanese movies. It's just strange.
