What's the difference between self shipping versus having fantasies about/a crush on a character and posting about it or writing self insert fic about it? I've heard the term self shipping before but I assumed it was just a tongue in cheek phrase for fictional crushes or writing self insert romance fic

Yeah, this was going to be my question too. Does “self-shipping” include writing author-insert fic? Reading reader-insert fic? Having a fantasy about fucking a fictional character? Having a fantasy about fucking a real life celebrity?

I can't speak for OP but serious "self shippers" fall into a different category to me than the others. A crush on a character is one-sided and doesn't mean other people can't also crush on the character together with you. Entire fandoms are shared crushes sometimes. But if you ship yourself with Character + people who ship Character with anyone else up to and including their canon love interest DNI - and it often comes in a combo package like that - that's a different league

OP and yeah, you nailed it. I don't consider people who crush on characters or fantasize about characters self shippers because 1) most people do that at some point in time, and 2) the people who do it don't take it seriously and are fully conscious that they're crushing on a fictional character. I'm talking about the people who actually DO take it seriously and get angry at anyone who ships that character with anyone else/doesn't want to interact with anyone who ships that character with any other character because that's unhinged behavior. They're a fictional character, they're never going to end up with you, and someone else shipping them with another character doesn't hurt you in any way because you can simply not read it/look at it.

That's what I mean about blurring the lines between fiction and reality and why I said I don't mind when young teenagers do it because that's normal behavior for kids that age who are just learning what crushes and attraction are and trying to figure all of that stuff out. I expect that behavior from kids! Not adults.

so it's basically what people in the RP scene would call IC/OOC divide - people who understand that the characters are not themselves versus people who can't separate the characters from anything else. I understand what that is so yeah, anyone who is so entrenched and has zero IC/OOC boundary is someone I would not want to talk to at all ever.

That exactly, yes. I don't have a problem with people who treat the whole thing as just good, silly fun and remain conscious of the fact that we're talking about fictional characters here. It's when people lose sight of the "fictional" part that it crosses the line into weird and creepy.

I have always assumed self-shipping is just a new term for self-insert fic featuring romance or sex.
