What's the difference between self shipping versus having fantasies about/a crush on a character and posting about it or writing self insert fic about it? I've heard the term self shipping before but I assumed it was just a tongue in cheek phrase for fictional crushes or writing self insert romance fic

Yeah, this was going to be my question too. Does “self-shipping” include writing author-insert fic? Reading reader-insert fic? Having a fantasy about fucking a fictional character? Having a fantasy about fucking a real life celebrity?

(Anonymous) 2025-10-31 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't speak for OP but serious "self shippers" fall into a different category to me than the others. A crush on a character is one-sided and doesn't mean other people can't also crush on the character together with you. Entire fandoms are shared crushes sometimes. But if you ship yourself with Character + people who ship Character with anyone else up to and including their canon love interest DNI - and it often comes in a combo package like that - that's a different league

(Anonymous) 2025-11-01 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
OP and yeah, you nailed it. I don't consider people who crush on characters or fantasize about characters self shippers because 1) most people do that at some point in time, and 2) the people who do it don't take it seriously and are fully conscious that they're crushing on a fictional character. I'm talking about the people who actually DO take it seriously and get angry at anyone who ships that character with anyone else/doesn't want to interact with anyone who ships that character with any other character because that's unhinged behavior. They're a fictional character, they're never going to end up with you, and someone else shipping them with another character doesn't hurt you in any way because you can simply not read it/look at it.

That's what I mean about blurring the lines between fiction and reality and why I said I don't mind when young teenagers do it because that's normal behavior for kids that age who are just learning what crushes and attraction are and trying to figure all of that stuff out. I expect that behavior from kids! Not adults.

so it's basically what people in the RP scene would call IC/OOC divide - people who understand that the characters are not themselves versus people who can't separate the characters from anything else. I understand what that is so yeah, anyone who is so entrenched and has zero IC/OOC boundary is someone I would not want to talk to at all ever.

I have always assumed self-shipping is just a new term for self-insert fic featuring romance or sex.

I'm not into incest, loli/shota, noncon/dubcon, or abusive relationships in fanfic or fanart, but as long as people warn for that and put their stuff beneath cuts, I don't mind following and interacting with people who are. You do you, have fun. Selfshipping, though? Instant DNI. I'm totally fine with people being into weird, twisted, fucked-up stuff that's 100% fictional. It's the blurring of fiction and reality that I find creepy AF and I want nothing to do with it. I should note that this doesn't apply to people who are obviously young teenagers. But once you hit adulthood, that's a great big "nope" from me.

You realize adults can jokingly or passively self ship without getting crazy about it right? Like some do it for fun after a long day of like doing normal life stuff. Being adult doesn't mean they're serious about it.

It's all about how strong a fantasy vs real life boundary you have. You can be into silly fandom hypothetical stuff and then step away and live your real life. Being an adult doesn't change that or mean you can't have fun anymore.

But hey if i ever encounter you in the wild, I would be delighted to block you. You sound insufferable

(Anonymous) 2025-10-31 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Now if only plenty of adult yume/self shippers didn't give the whole group a bad name. And just because they don't gender their whole real lives around it, a lot of them still are batshit bullies online so... yeah. You sound pretty ignorant of the shittier parts of your fellow self shippers so I guess OP would be lucky if you'd block them.

(Anonymous) 2025-10-31 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
DA.

You say this as if this kind of behaviour is unique to self shippers when it very much isn't. I don't do self-shipping and I've seen this kind of nasty, awful behaviour across my time in fandom because some people are just not any good at sharing the sandbox.

Also it shows your complete immaturity that because there's some assholes in a group it means that the whole lot are bad, which is a child's type of logic

(Anonymous) 2025-11-01 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's not immature to block members of a group that annoys you based on bad experiences. I'm not obligated to waste my time with yumes on the off-chance they might be the rare normal ones when I don't want to interact with them or their content anyway. I also block ship tags/stans of ships I dislike and I also block antis. Thats because I AM mature enough to be able to curate my online experience in ways that won't annoy me. I think the vast majority of yumes are cringy and suck. Cry about it, I guess. I have better things to do than give people I want nothing to do with the benefit of the doubt.

This, it's hardly unique to them. If anything, it's something I encounter in most other average ships than the little that I've seen from self-shippers.

Why not just paint all shippers with that brush? Saves even more time if you generalize a little further.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-01 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
If it helps you, you can do that.
Lol lots of butthurt selfshippers ITT. Sorry that you as a group are annoying I guess.

imagine being mad over people doing things that make them happy that doesn't cause harm. lol.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-01 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
imagine calling person blocking and not interacting with people they don't vibe with "being mad"

(Anonymous) 2025-11-01 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
The only time I care what people are doing in fandom is if they're being assholes to other people, otherwise people can like what they want and create what they want and it is really wild to be mad about people enjoying fandom in a way you don't like.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-01 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-01 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but where did anyone say they were mad? I avoid big anime fans, but I'm not mad at them for liking what they like or mad they exist.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-01 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this a Snapewife?

*seriously, this is the sort of selfship Secret OP means right? 😅

(Anonymous) 2025-11-01 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
In short, yes. Or at least that's a version of selfships. (Personally, I think this term is confusing because I also heard it as "shipping a character with (a different version of) that same character" before.)

(Anonymous) 2025-11-01 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the same as you, nonny! I have issues with kins and stuff like that, too. It weirds me out A LOT. I also have some line that shall not be crossed regarding RPF shipping.
IDK I think my approach can be summarised as: fiction? ALL GOOD, go crazy. IRL? MMMMH now wait a second...
I'm not saying "don't do that", but I'm saying "I feel really uncomfortable with you blurring the lines of fiction/reality with your kin/self-shipping/etc and/or obsessing this much about IRL people. We shall never interact with each other BYEEEE HAVE FUN"

(Anonymous) 2025-11-02 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
OP here and yes, you get me. I find kinning and RPF super creepy too for the same reason.

Like you said, stuff that remains entirely within the realm of fiction is 100% fine with me, no matter how weird it may be. It's when you start crossing the line into real life that it makes me incredibly uncomfortable.
