'Cause we gotta do this at least like once a year.

[Poll #1484034]

Whatever's decided goes into practice next Saturday, Nov 14th.

the community ones simply cannot go. they usually generate arguments and arguments are one of the reasons i watch this community.

[identity profile] vickyblueeyez.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I voted to leave them both. I ship it has the potential to generate fandom. I have no problem with the 'I love this comm' ones. Sometimes that's a secret within itself.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I voted to leave 'em in. I don't really pay attention to the comm ones, so they don't bother me. The ship/hit ones I like, though, and occasionally find ones that I agree with... the obscure ones are especially fun.

[identity profile] ink-tree.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
could you concentrate them to the beginning or end? at least the i hit/ship its. but...that's really more work than it's worth. I scroll past everything I don't recognize the fandom for anyway.

[identity profile] fisting-pigs.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I really don't mind seeing 'I love/hate this comm but....' that's a secret then, that's fine.

I ship it/I'd hit it ones get on my nerves to be honest unless it's totally crazy, and I mean VERY crazy, even by LJ's standards.

[identity profile] duae.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Truly weird ship it/hit it secrets are worth being secrets. But they have to be like... "Giant Tomato x Audry II I ship it", or "the creepy boob-tree woman in The Last Unicorn I'd hit it!" Not "*insert popular pairing here* I ship it!" Yeah, you and 3/4ths of the fandom.

Maybe put Ship/Hit secrets at the bottom as Not Secret Not Fandom etc.?

[identity profile] jestergundam.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually entertained the idea of Giant Tomato x Audry II for a minute after reading that comment. Huh.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-11 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Leave the ship it/hit it. Sometimes they can get tiresome when you're not familiar with the characters/fandom, but that's no reason to punish everyone.

This is, after all, a place to share things we keep secret for a reason. We all know what a touchy subject shipping is in fandom. I understand why people would rather stay anonymous than stir up drama among their friends.

[identity profile] putana.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The Ship/Hit ones...I figure, if they are okay if you can't find porn for it. If you can, then it isn't rare/shocking enough to be a secret.

[identity profile] slythwolf.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a problem with judging people's reasons for keeping secrets. Whether you think someone should get new friends or whatever, who cares, the point is that it is a secret that they do keep.

I have a hard time understanding how loving a community can be a secret, though. Presumably the person in question is a member of the community. If not, they're missing out on all the locked stuff!

[identity profile] rehime.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems kinda cruel, but you really should explain why you like/dislike something. If you really, really can't, maybe that's a sign that it's not worth all the fuss. Also it'll engage people who aren't part of that comm/know the characters being shipped.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-11 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I SHIP IT/I'D HIT IT can stay if they have even a tiiiiiiny bit of explanation, I think. "Secret because he's old enough to be my father!" or "Secret because they've barely spoken!" would be enough in my book. At least they give context to people who don't know the fandom.

I love comm secrets, but only the hate ones. Why would you keep it a secret that you love something? Let the mods know personally and make them happy. Unless the comm is, like, about Nazi uniforms and you're a Jew. I guess that's a valid secret.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Leave them. It's not a big deal.

I don't have the words to explain how much *WIN* that icon is.

Is it really that hard to scroll past the secrets you don't like and let people have their fun?

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it is.

So we should ban all the secrets we don't like.

I voted the same way for both: 'Not secrets unless they...' It's nice to hear a reason. MAKE IT INTERESTING

[identity profile] favabean05.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
If there was an option for "leave 'em except the mishaland ones" for the comms, Id have chosen that one. But I chose 'leave em' for both.

[identity profile] flutingfrenzy.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd hit it/I ship it: I ship it.

Aw, I love the I'D HIT IT/I SHIP IT secrets. Sometimes it's nice to know that it's not just you that ships something even if it isn't a secret for you. They're also a fun way to find and poke around in new fandoms.

For the most part, I feel like secrets are secrets; yeah, maybe the person needs new friends or whatever, but how does one go about dumping one's friends? People make secrets (most of the time) because they have something they want to say anonymously, not as a way to provide free entertainment for f!s readers (though I'm sure that's part of it).

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"not secrets" options... but I think this is kind of hard to judge in such vague terms. I mean, there are a lot of exceptions that could be made. if you ship generic female anime character A with generic female anime character B, uh, I'm not sure why that's a secret. but if you ship, um, abigail breslin and liam neeson? probably secretworthy, yes.

"not secrets" still seem like the best options to me, anyway. it's actually gotten to the point where pretty much every secret could use a "S!B", because a lot of secrets just don't seem worth keeping secret, or, uh, they don't seem very important at all. (who cares if you were inspired to eat snickerdoodles by veronica mars... lol)

[identity profile] hadtoomuch.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
One person's "secret" shouldn't be discounted because another doesn't feel like scrolling past it.

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Not secrets forever other options never

I voted for "Not secrets unless they have more than plain old "I'd hit it/I ship it" These postings seem like such lazy, filler secrets like the only reason the OP did them was so she/he could create a secret in the first place.

A secret should have an, "OMG! How could they?" or "OMG! That's wrong!" affect. But most of the time with "hit it" and "ship it" secrets, it's, "Meh. Next."

And what's even worse is when a fandom secret page of the day is made of 50% or more "I hit/ship it" secrets. That's like reading a magazine where most of the content is ads. Where's the meaty secrets? The juicy ones?

If you want to post an "I hit/ship it" secret make the post worth your and our time.

[identity profile] calidreamin08.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
whatevs, they're amusing nevertheless.

(Anonymous) 2009-11-11 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Can we just ban the really ugly secrets? Blue text on a dark background, DON'T DO IT.

Or the secrets that are just screenshots of the secret typed into a text program?

[identity profile] klytaemnestra.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)

If there's a reason behind it, sure. I do think that canon 'I Ship It' secrets need to go under 'Not Secret' though. I mean, seriously, if you're shipping something that is established canon how the hell is that a secret?

[identity profile] dwinghy.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with that. The living end for me was when someone made an "I ship it" secret for Barack and Michelle Obama. Like, wow, good for you, you "ship" a couple who've been married almost 20 years. Must've taken a lot of courage to admit that one.

[identity profile] revengent.livejournal.com 2009-11-11 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the Hit it/Ship it ones should stay, because yes, you should be able to share that same info with your friends, but it's also to fun to share that with other people, because others may feel the same.

As for the stuff about communities, I think they should stay for sure, because I have found about some of my favorite communities from here on F!S. :D
