He might consider himself goth as in tastes and interest in media, like literature, that he likes? As goth isn’t just the aesthetic, though a lot of us into it do dress at least a little bit alt, but I have met goths who don’t dress as you’d expect but are still into the music and art side of it.

Or perhaps he considers himself goth because he used to dress that way more but no longer does? Either way there isn’t a different meaning of the word for it over here, but as a subgroup is has a wide variety of people into it too.

Yeah, I mean I'd describe myself as goth, but it's not something that necessarily comes across in my wardrobe-- sure, a decent chunk of my wardrobe is black. I also have a penchant for brightly colored button downs, haven't bothered with makeup in ages, never much bother with jewelry (fear I may have lost my bat earrings for good)...

But, the music I listen to, the movies and shows I watch, and the books I read, the things that catch my eye... my interests aren't narrow, but they're certainly more gothic than not.

And, to me, that seems pretty normal, because I was raised by my dad, who mostly dressed in colorful button-down shirts... and kept Halloween decorations up in his office year 'round, introduced me to horror movies and bombastic rock and roll with demons and monsters on the album art, the works of Edward Gorey and Edgar Allan Poe...

AYRT.

Yeah, like I don’t do the intense make up anymore. For one it wouldn’t look as good on me as it did a decade ago, and two I just don’t have the time or care to anymore and I still call myself goth. I do dress in lots of black and alt styles but that’s it for visual queues, not being dressed up in full goth glam does not mean you aren’t goth.
