I'm nervous about the increasing speed with which entertainers go from "endearingly familiar" to "grating" for me now.

I used to be able to enjoy someone (a Youtuber, a podcaster, a TV host) for months or years without getting sick of them. But now it takes only a few weeks for me to find them irritating in some way.

Is this a depression thing? (I thought | was doing better.) Is this getting old and crotchety? (I'm only mid-30s.) Am I just less patient with people?

(Anonymous) 2025-11-07 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
well, I wouldn't discount age if you're comparing your consumption from when you were a teen, but if you're consuming enough content of a single person for weeks at a time, it's probably just sheer fatigue. I can't think of anyone I'd want to watch so much of...besides an actor in a show and even then, give me 3 episode a night and that's plenty.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-07 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm biased because I'm definitely getting more crochety with age but yeah, agree that it might just be fatigue. I don't like watching too much of any one thing these days, whether it's a genre, specific TV show, specific Youtuber, etc. I get bored and irritable, and small things that barely register when you watch something rarely starts to get on your nerves.

Variety really is the spice of life.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-07 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you're outgrowing them. Or you're tired of the format. Maybe give them a rest for a month or two then revisit them to see if you feel any different.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-07 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I could definitely see this being a combination of overstimulation, cynicism, and fatigue.

Shit's fucked up on like a terrifying political macro level, and meanwhile the enshitification of everything continues unchecked and is (rightfully IMO) making people increasingly cynical about just about every form of consumer good that exists, including arts and entertainment.

We're being heavily conditioned to think of most things as cheap and fleeting, and meanwhile we're being inundated with MORE OF EVERYTHING, ALL THE TIME.

So yeah, it would not be strange at all if a lot of people were feeling increasingly fickle, cynical, and tetchy about all sorts of relatively inconsequential stuff these days, when the quality of most consumables as dropped precipitously, production-volume and sales tactics have skyrocketed, and whenever we DO manage to find something decent that we actually like, it'll most likely either be discontinued because it's no longer doing viral numbers, or cheapened into a shittier version of itself within a year or two.

Oof, did not realize this is something that's been creeping up in my life until I read this secret.

Pretty sure it's a mix of a lot of things.
I think for me, being extremely online now is rather mainstream so a general feeling of a celebrity being endearing can wear out quick since it's so in our faces.
If it's not loving Pedro Pascal for having sweet dad vibes, it's living for Dakota Johnson not following media scripts to make the audience feel comfortable when doing interviews/promotions.
Generally, they're endearing. But I've had moments where I just can't give any shits about anything and that endearing stuff grates on my nerves.

Similar to how it can be difficult for me to go into work and chitchat with my coworkers. It can be pleasant, but when I've been going to work day in and day out for weeks and months on end, it becomes such a drag to get up at certain time and go into work and talk to same people I see so often.

It's not personal. Making me think of Christopher Moltisanti's classic "the regularness of fucking life is too much".

When I'm really frustrated or irritated, anything that I'm okay with or even that I like can become profoundly grating to me. The frustration or irritation gets to a point where it spills over onto other things. Maybe it's not the YouTuber or TV Host, but something else in your life is boiling over and your entertainment is in the splash zone.

I wish I could find a streaming service with the movie "The Student Prince" on it. You know the one with Mario Lanza's voice dubbed over the lead actor's voice. I have my reasons, okay.

I never fully understood Noel Fielding when he referred to himself as "goth". I'm American, so I figured it just ha a slightly different meaning in the UK? But to me, he's clearly glam, like Marc Bolan.

Now here he's (what I think of as) goth to an extreme for comedy purposes, but that's a character, not Noel himself.

I've been pondering this since his Mighty Boosh days.

He might consider himself goth as in tastes and interest in media, like literature, that he likes? As goth isn’t just the aesthetic, though a lot of us into it do dress at least a little bit alt, but I have met goths who don’t dress as you’d expect but are still into the music and art side of it.

Or perhaps he considers himself goth because he used to dress that way more but no longer does? Either way there isn’t a different meaning of the word for it over here, but as a subgroup is has a wide variety of people into it too.

My favorite ships are ones where the canon characters bicker a lot, and my favorite fic is where they find each other truly infuriating at the start but learn to see and respect each other's strengths and value as people over time. Even if they remain infuriating sometimes.

But 'somehow, for absolutely no reason and against their best judgment, they instantly found the other character ~unbearably attractive~ and the entire 30 chapter ship is held up solely by the strength of somebody's 10/10 tits/abs/ass' fic is absolutely not what I'm looking for.

I hate that when I look up ship fic, it's a complete coin toss which version it will be.

I know we all like to think we're a little superhero in the making, that there is a hero inside us all, powering through adversity, but I think I'm more like 80s Skeletor. I'm not powering through anything, as soon as I can see I'm beat I'm all "Until next time He-Man" and outta there.

I only watch people cooking or eating food online if it's stuff that I'm actually not very interested in eating myself. I like learning things or hearing how they taste or just seeing someone show off their skills, but I avoid anything that's going to set off a food craving. Thankfully, I don't have much of a sweet tooth despite how much like baking, but anything with pasta or pizza is right out. I do end up watching a lot of content about fast food that mildly disgusts me.
