I pack some stuff in advance, but finish up the night before. Never wing it, I'm too scatterbrained for that and will need to write up lists, then consult them obsessively in case I miss something.

I do tons of research to figure out what I want to see, then narrow it down and figure out a rough itinerary so I can also figure out where to stay, how to get around, what else is in the area, etc. But it's not carved in stone, nor is it a punishing schedule. I always figure in down time if the trip is longer than a week, and it's flexible with busier days/more physically demanding days vs. slower days/relaxation so I can change that as needed.
