“hi. this is AI generated thru chatgpt. that means it uses stolen work from other authors. where do you think chatgpt gets its information from? it scrapes the internet. it uses other people's works to churn out a conglomeration of words. you probably liked it so much because it scraped other real, human authors to create this artificial regurgitated imitation, while using bottles upon bottles of clean, unrecyclable water to create. check their profile. it isn't difficult to tell from the work itself and the mass produced fics they churn out in the last two weeks. their amazon listing with their "books" is all AI generated covers, profile pictures, and writing. please delete your comment, report the profile, and write a comment to a real author today. take care... and good luck!”

I've been making an effort to comment on more stories I read. I got this reply on a comment I made and it has made me not want to comment ever again.

It's an AI bot comment. AO3 is full of them at the moment, so don't take it personally.

That comment is almost certainly a spambot... and if it's not, it's an asshole using "we can always tell" as a dogwhistle against authors they don't like, with no actual concrete evidence whatsoever.

Ignore it, and others like it, and keep commenting on the fics that inspire you. :)

I'm never going to stop sharing the story of how I got a "this cheating author is using AI, everybody report them!!" comment on an update that had no text in it. (Just images.)

The "report their profile" thing is a giveaway that this isn't sincere:

1) LLM-generated fics are not against AO3's TOS. One of the big reasons for that is, to protect real authors from being harassed through false reports exactly like this

2) If the commenter is really mad, they could've just reported the "problem" themselves. But instead, they're trying to pressure legitimate, active, non-bot users to do the reporting on their behalf? Suspicious as hell

How dystopian is it that now, not only do we have to worry about AI-generated content, but we have to worry about AI-powered bots using the threat of AI to guilt-trip us into reporting and deleting actual human-generated content?

(Anonymous) 2025-11-13 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
That's a bot.

AO3 has been having a spambot problem for over a year now. They often accuse fics of being AI generated, or are generic rude comments.

Please keep commenting, creators love it. We'll take care of the botspam by deleting it.

Yeah, these are AI generated bot comments. I've got them on fics over 10 years old which are obviously not AI fics. And I've got the occasional one on equally old comments!

I've seen bot comments before, but not bot replies to comments. Weird.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-13 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that is very obviously a spam bot comment. I kind of worry about people that we're not able to tell between spam bots and real people, especially when the bot comments are so outrageously meritless like this. Like, I just don't think anyone would spend time sincerely typing comments like this in response to a complete stranger. Like "delete your comment"? Really? Reminds me of teenagers going "delete ur account!!" back in the 2010s. Well, I suppose that means some people WOULD do this sincerely, but those people really do not deserve an iota of your time. Report them (https://transformativeworks.tumblr.com/post/800055206080643072/harassment-spam-bot-alert) and move on.
