Fresh takes in old genres.

Based on #6, what new or rare approaches would you like to see in your favorite genre?

I'd like to see more stories in the western genre, but with casts that aren't all white guys. More diversity, more women in roles besides damsel in distress, loyal wife, saloon girl, etc. Real representation for Native American tribes appropriate to the region/setting. More diehard, wholesome friendships, more adventures.

I'd love to see something in Celtic or Mesopotamian mythology. They're so rich story wise but people only pay attention to Greek myth because that's what they're taught in school.

More horror that take place in crowded cities like Candyman, Cloverfield, and Rosemary's Baby.

Action adventure where the main character is a woman taking all the damage that a male hero would (no perfect hair and makeup, no titillating and artfully torn clothes, gimme bruises and blood and scrapes and dirt). Bonus points if it's F/F.

Atomic Blonde.

I love that movie. I want 50 more just like it.

Yup, eternally here for more of this kind of movie. Particularly if it's a bit gritty and the protagonist feels not too much larger than life.

I really liked 10 Cloverfield Lane for this. The female protagonist is just a normal person; she's not a badass and she spends the entire movie understandably terrified. But she's in a horrifying situation and she fights hard for her own life, in a way that feels realistic and authentic.

It's a pretty mid movie, IIRC, but I feel like the Alicia Vikander version of Tomb Raider delivers a female protagonist who braves crazy danger and takes a lot of damage. IDK if it's too much on the "artfully torn clothes" side of things. My recollection is that it's not too bad on that front, but I only saw it once, so I could be misremembering.

As a fan of the Tomb Raider reboots, I was so disappointed in that movie. Mostly for the plot changes, but I also thought Vikander was a miscast.

As someone who knows fuck all about the game in any capacity, I quite liked Vikander in the role. She felt like an actual person to me, and physically I loved that Vikander was a combination of girlish femininity and lean, compact strength. It was the first time I'd had any real interest in Laura Croft or the Tomb Raider story. But it did seem to be unpopular with fans of the games. To each their own.

Not an unusual experience when it comes to game adaptations. People who come into them blind tend to enjoy it more and for what it is than people who come in with prior expectations. I think the fewer barriers between adaptations of games to movies, as opposed to books to movies, make it a bit harder to disconnect between the two.

werewolves

(Anonymous) 2025-11-17 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I would love female werewolves. And not just ~sexy~ female werewolves. I just feel like there is so much to explore, feminine rage, moon/menstruation connection are just the most obvious choices.

This isn't something I'm overtly drawn to, but I finally watched Ginger Snaps last year and since then I'm like, actually yeah, more female werewolf stories please!

Re: werewolves

Agreed. The obvious connections are so obvious that it's clearly a gender bias and sexism issue that more media doesn't address it. Shout out to Ginger Snaps, of course.

The Company of Wolves might be something in your wheelhouse. Also a lot of Tanith Lee's books explore feminine anger and rage.

More switching up roles, more female characters in stereotypical male roles/tropes and vice versa.

More scifi where Earth is just one small part of the universe, not either the savior or the devil, just one small planet in a vast universe. Same with humans in fantasy: not the saviors of the world, not the destroyers of the world, just one of the many species that live and work together.

More M/M and F/F romances is scifi and fantasy.

More main female characters who don't fit the stereotypes of female characters. And same with more men who don't fit male stereotypes. And more characters who mix it up, play with both.

I would love to see more arcs of heroes turning into villains. We do get some redemption arcs, but I'd love to see it reversed more: a character who starts out with the best intentions, is a real hero, but by the end they are the villain.
