I find it tiresome how it seems IMPOSSIBLE to ever have a neutral or neutral-ish discussion on Taylor Swift. If you say anything slightly negative, her defenders will swoop in to tell you you're wrong and you're a misogynist. If you say anything slightly positive, her haters will swoop in to tell you she's an eco-terrorist and MAGA-adjacent and you must be too. It's impossible to have a discussion about her without it going to the extremes, and people overreacting to what you say, twisting your words, moving the goalposts, etc. Too many people, both fans and haters, take it too seriously.

Amen.

Sometimes you just want to be able to say "X Song is a banger" or "I didn't much care for Y Album" without fear of accidentally kicking off World War III.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
lord, yes. i don't know why this woman inspires such strong emotions in people, but both extremes are on high alert for reasons to yell at you if you don't agree with them

I'm a little confused what a 'neutral' discussion in a fandom sense of Taylor Swift would entail. Doesn't every conversation about a celebrity mean that whoever is doing the talking, wants to talk about it for whatever bias they have, positive or negative?

Most people who are neutral about a celebrity won't have anything much to say about them, right?

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds like OP thinks that if you say anything slightly negative, her defenders will swoop in to tell you you're wrong and you're a misogynist, while if you say anything slightly positive, her haters will swoop in to tell you she's an eco-terrorist and MAGA-adjacent and you must be too. I think that's what OP means by neutral, which is perhaps not quite the right word, but they did go on to explain what they meant.

I think they might mean that they aren't pro -or- anti Taylor Swift but may want to talk about her music? I may be way off base, though

(Anonymous) 2025-11-25 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
Neutral opinion: "I like Shake if Off" and "Ophelia" but I don't own any Swift albums.
Extremists: You heathen! How dare you only like a couple of songs instead of all the glorious work! / You nazi, how dare you enjoy listening to any song from this democrat hating shill!

She is MAGA adjacent. Taylor and Brittany MAGAhomes are probably in their luxury box crying about the Chiefs losing.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Brittany MAGAhomes?

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not helping.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
OP: "Man, it sucks that you can't even mention Taylor Swift in passing without someone jumping in to tell you she's literally Satan."

You: *does exactly that*

I don't know if your comment was meant ironically, or if you're just that weirdly obsessed that you just can't stop yourself from popping up out of your hole every time someone invokes The Devil's Name, but either way, you're proving OP's point quite spectacularly.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh i'm not sure if you read the secret and decided to demonstrate exactly what op meant or if you mean this sincerely but either way, lol

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you okay? You've been dishing out some real dumb takes the last few days.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-24 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know a whole lot about Taylor Swift, but from what I have heard with her endorsing Kamala and I guess a local candidate in the past, my guess about her politics is that she is left-leaning, but she is at the level of wealth where she personally really doesn't have to worry about it any of it. They completely block abortion access and she or a loved one needs an abortion? Not a problem for her, she can afford to go wherever needed to get one. ICE deporting people? It won't be her. Healthcare prices through the ceiling? Billionaire, not a problem. Economy is shit? Billionaire, not a problem. LGBT rights removed/challenged? Doesn't affect her, because even if she IS secretly queer, she has the money to do what she wants and doesn't have to worry about repercussions. Job losses? Again, doesn't affect her. Being at that level of wealth and power, she doesn't really have a personal stake in politics, and so it's easier for her to overlook the politics of people she is friends with. Whereas if you're in a situation where your life is actively worse because you've lost reproductive rights or health insurance or your job or are worried about being deported or harassed, it's much more difficult to look at someone who supports Trump and say "Oh it's ok it's just a difference of opinion, we can still be friends."

You proved OP's point...

(Anonymous) 2025-11-24 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
she might be the type of person who doesn't want to shut everyone out of her life for being maga. for instance, i imagine she has family members who are maga or maybe even her father is maga. i wouldn't know but if she owes her career to him like some people say, it's kind of hard to shut him out of her life even if he's maga.

she might have the kind of mindset where she thinks if she maintains a good relationship with people in maga, then she might have a chance to deradicalize them a little. that's essentially all you can do for someone who's in a cult.

I agree. People will fall all over themselves to defend her, but can we all just stop pretending that Taylor isn’t literally and figuratively in bed with MAGA?

I agree with this secret, but I'm also curious how OP, and other fandom secret commenters, would characterize most of the recent Taylor Swift discussion on F!S. Personally, to me, the majority of comments here seem to be reasonable, but I'd be curious to see how divided people's perspectives are on the balance between overly-negative comments and overly-defensive comments.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say they're extreme by default but only because fan conversations are all extreme by default. Most people don't listen to a song on the radio and ponder the greatness and/or the sins of the person who sang it, they go "oh a catchy tune, cool" and that's the extent of their opinion. People who are already getting into discussing the creator as a person are already way more invested

"Did you like that song?" is a conversation you might have at work. "What do you think of this artist as a person?" is already non-neutral to begin with

If you want we can instead talk about how she can’t carry tune and how her attempts to hit the high notes are a crime against hearing folk.

I have found a flawless solution to this: not talking about Taylor Swift. Would recommend to everyone.

Every day I wake up and drink an ounce of "Oh Yeah, Talor Swift Has A Couple Of Good Songs" juice and my life is better for it.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-24 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
She's overexposed on the internet. Thus, everyone has to have an opinion about her. Once she falls in popularity (it happens to everyone, no shade to her) I reckon you can have normal conversations about her again.

If it helps, almost nobody in my country knows much about her and the most you can expect is someone asking if she's the girl who sings about all her ex-boyfriends. And that's if they even recognise her name. I think only people in my generation (I'm the same age as Taylor) know of her but even then it's a coin toss whether they recognise her music. My niece heard a song of hers that she recognised as Taylor's for the first time last year. My point being: you could try internet spaces that aren't so heavily American? Might be worth a shot.

It frustrates me how a mid-singer like Taylor Swift can inspire this much give a fuck. It's worse than how much drama happens around JKR, who's also a mid-artist at best. The only thing remotely relevant about either one is their billion-dollar empires built with their mediocre talents.
