Inspired by responses to 2 - reading angles

(Anonymous) 2025-11-23 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Bit baffled by "won't turn my head to read that" since... I have no trouble reading text at any angle - don't tilt my head to read book spines... Regularly read text upside down if someone's sitting opposite me at a meeting and their notes are visible. Always thought people who turned stuff more towards them was either a nearsighted "need it closer" thing or "want the illustrations/graphs the right angle thing". Is it really that difficult for people to read sideways? If so, is it really asking so much to tilt your head / angle your device?

People here get weirdly upset when a secret isn't made to their specifications. No, it isn't that hard to read sideways or tilt your head for most people, but it also isn't that hard to scroll on by and yet.

Eh, reports of 'people' implying multiple, and 'weirdly upset' implying strong feelings, are largely exaggerated. One person posted a meme.

I think more people got upset about the meme than the secret.

i can read it, but it takes longer than reading normally does. i am on a pc so i can't just turn it sideways easily, and i don't care enough to put the effort into reading the sideways text. same thing as when people use weird fonts or clashing colors. i'm just not going to bother.

From my experience, for a lot of people (with standard vision) it does make reading significantly more difficult if the letters aren’t in their normal orientation. I think reading mirror-writing is similar. Not impossible, but takes more effort and time. There’s a reason most people tilt their heads to read book spines.

In this case, I suspect the font choice is a compounding issue. People would probably have an easier time with a cleaner font.

I'm on a desktop and can't angle my device, and no, those aren't very easy to read for me even if I tilt my head. I cannot physically tilt my head to the degree that I could read it without a struggle. It's partly the desktop monitor, partly my own physical limitations. I don't make a fuss over such formatting but I'll probably just scroll past to something that IS easier for me to read.

If a book spine used that font, I wouldn’t be able to read it, either. If the text were oriented horizontally, I’d still struggle because frankly that’s a terrible font. I didn’t even notice the thread because I saw the illegible secret is apparently about Wicked so I just scrolled on by.

Same, I can read forward, backwards, sideways but I'm not going to bother with that font and that fandom.

When the font is like that? Yes, it is. That font is not a great choice for sideways writing.

Same, between the font and the sideways text, it would take me some effort to read it when ordinarily reading text feels effortless. I saw that it was about a book I don't know anything about so I didn't take the trouble. If it had been about a fandom I am into, I probably would have.

with this font? Yes, it's difficult.

Also I am on my phone but I can't be bothered to lock rotation just for one secret

Eh, I can do it, but it's not easy. That font choice doesn't help.

I'm one of those people who has no trouble reading upside down or sideways-- for me the font choice DID render it unreadable, even with my new glasses, or at least too much headache to bother, but yeah, I've got no trouble with reading many fonts sideways.

It takes some effort so it can be difficult to read things at an angle/upside down. Most times I have to tilt my head (such as was the case with Secret 2). It's a little easier for me to read backwards, funnily enough.

I have dysautonomia that's triggered by tilting, and I'm reading on a computer, so yeah, it IS difficult for me to read sideways. If a book spine was tilted that way, I can TILT THE BOOK IN A WAY THAT'S MORE READABLE.

Also, book titles are shorter than that secret text, and usually in a larger, more legible font. It's easy to read <10 words sideways, but the secret with lots of text in a kind of weird font is a different ball of wax.
