Intrusive thoughts

(Anonymous) 2025-11-26 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
anyone deal with intrusive thoughts?

I made a real fuck up today and normally I've gotten pretty good at dealing with my anxiety and intrusive thoughts but goddamn not today. Just horrible anxiety thoughts shoved in the front of my brain on repeat and my normal tactics are not working.

Suggestions, empathy, and sympathy all welcome. The mental struggle is real and rough right now.

Ugh, I hear you, but I don't know if I have any good suggestions. Music or even white noise helps me sometimes-- but only sometimes.

Music and white noise don't work for me, usually distractions like reading or gaming - something I can sink my whole brain into - work but not tonight. Thank you for the reply though. It's a weird thing where I'm like "yes! people who get it!" but also sad that others have to deal with this nonsense.

Have you thought you might have rejection sensitivity disorder? I know when I fuck up at work I start to spiral because my RSD is going out of control.

Oh I definitely do! It's all tied up together with the anxiety and ADHD. I normally have better strategies for dealing but I think this on top of the stress of getting ready for the holidays has just fucked my normal approach and nothing seems to be working.

Sorry you have to sometimes deal with this spiraling nonsense too.

Do you mean Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria?

Medication. I used to have to be listening, watching, reading, etc etc something every minute of every day to distract myself from those stupid thoughts. I got medicated for other reasons and the thoughts got a hell of a lot quieter and a lot of the time they're gone all together. I will never rawdog reality again.

I used to put three or four songs on at once and make an effort to try and pick each one out as I listened; nowadays I get a random word with more than 10 letters and try to focus on picking out as many different words as I can from its letters. Sorting and identifying helps me to focus my brain on something completely separate from the intrusive thoughts.

When I was younger, I did better by visualising whatever it was on a canvas and painting over it in white. If it bled through, if it popped back into my head, the mental paintbrush swept right over it, over and over and over again until the first thing I thought of was the white canvas.

I put Tears for Fears’ Shout on and scream with it, then I cry.
