My coworkers are stupid.

(Anonymous) 2025-11-29 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, but they're stupid. Every time the weather is forecast to get to freezing, they think the ground is going to immediately freeze over and that if there's any water on the ground, it's going to turn into an ice slick. Like, today the high was in the 60Fs/15-20C and it rained a little. Chilly and drizzly and windy and ugly but not all that cold. It hasn't been very cold here recently. Tomorrow a cold front moves in and it's predicted to drop to around 32F/0C as the low. And they're all just certain it's going to immediately freeze what little water will be left on the ground and that it won't be safe to drive. All of these people are in their 40s or 50s but they still don't have the sense to realize that if it's been warm, the air temp reaching freezing doesn't mean that water on the ground will turn into ice. Of course it doesn't happen, it doesn't work like that, but the next time we get down to freezing, the cycle repeats. I'm sick of listening to them cry and carry on about how the roads are going to ice over when there is no fucking way that's going to happen.

Arrgh, annoying. The ground is still warm! Nothing is gonna freeze that soon.

My co-workers are mostly ridiculously clueless, as well. One of the individuals had a home visit, had an (or more than one) accident, and came home with even her shoes wet with urine. They...changed her bottoms and left it at that. NO SHOWER. Didn't even change out her tops before bed, and she had food stains on them. GODS. Fuckwits. Plus didn't put her shoes and stuff into the washer (she got home at 6PM) until about 20 minutes before I arrived for my 11PM shift. Yeesh.

That poor lady, that's how people get sores and infections; I hope she'll be okay. Glad you were on the ball, at least.

I'm what's called a Direct Support Professional. We have individuals with developmental and physical disabilities and we are home staff for them. The house I work in 99% of the time has three ladies of varying abilities, but whom all need 24/7 staff to assist with stuff like money, cooking, bathing/toileting, meds.... We're there to help them live as independently as possible.

It really depends on where you live and how your roads are made. I live in the southeast and our roads are made to expel heat. A soft frost is enough to turn any moisture on the roads into ice. Our town is unusual in that we have a fleet of salt trucks and we even have a couple plows. It’s going down to 31° tonight and they’re out salting right now because we had rain this afternoon.

i have a coworker who acts that way. for her, she's fishing for an excuse to leave early/call in. she literally lives less than half a mile from work and she'll lie and said the road there is too frozen to make it to work, when everyone else, including people who live 20+ miles out, are there. she blows up everything into a crisis hoping she can call in. the boss is a really nice woman but she is spineless and lets it go on until the big boss gets enough and has a talk. then things are fixed for a few weeks but soon go back to the same bullshit of calling in over every excuse

I mean, they just can go and change tires if they are scared of that.??? It depends if it's going to be just raining for some time or not. But couple of weeks earlier isn't bad.

Okay, I have so many gripes with my colleagues. I just can rant for days. Fucking "creative people". Anyway. My most hated is this woman. She can't find space to work and ended working in our room because my department has the most amount of space. She is a fucking busybody and is always into everyone's work conversations. Like I am discussing with a colleague quite urgent and time consuming task, and she "helpfully suggests" that I also should do (another 3 hours of work). Toxic positivity alone is some power plant amount of waste. She brings self-help books to work. Topped with my department's head being kinda hot headed I just caaaaaannnnt.

That is common here too. For me, so long as you have the time to take off, I won't give any fucks about you calling in. I tend to be out of sick days when bad weather comes so I usually go in XD
You bet your ass I'd call in if I had sick/emergency PTO time when the weather is shit.
If it's just a little misty/icy, most people won't call in. I live in Colorado and my workplace is in the foothills (near the Rocky Mointains, but closer to the smaller "foothills"/mountains east of the Rockies that we call the Front Range hills), so most people here know that a little snow/ice/wet weather likely won't make the roads bad. I tend to think it's cute/silly when people freak out over the weather because those people tend to be people not used to snow/ice during the colder seasons.

What kills me is I work the graveyard shift and if snow/ice starts up in the afternoon/evening/middle of the night, we're still expected to show up, but 85% of the time the day shift crew will get the call to not come into work due to the weather. *rolls eyes* Because the only time to worry about bad driving conditions is the morning and afternoon when the higher ups have to think about how they will be affected, but who gives a flying fuck about the other shifts. We get paid a dollar or two more for working off shift hours so driving in shit weather is part of the extra pay (they don't say this but I bet at least half the higher ups think this way).

The one time they actually canceled work for my shift due to the bad weather was because during the evening shift the pipes to one of the restrooms burst so they had to close the plant down. I called the weather hotline believing I would be told I have to go in, but was surprised when I was informed that work had been canceled.
My brother told me it was likely due to the snow accumulating at least 8 inches by 9PM, but the next day at work my lead said it was due to the frozen pipes that burst.
Lord knows how many times the day shift got work canceled though. So many times we'd gotten bad weather and tell each other to drive home safe and be told to shut everything down because the day shift won't be coming in.

I have learned that sadly most people in the general public are pretty stupid. Either just intellectually dumb or just don't use the brains they have. It's incredibly frustrating.
