People like Harry (skill, fame) & Hermione (intelligence) make him feel insecure. He feels superiority next to people like Ron because Ron isn't rich & doesn't come from a family with connections. He did feel comfortable approaching Harry but that was before he knew what the other was like. That Harry doesn't believe in upstairs, downstairs philosophy comes as a shock to him because that's all that matters to him.

So what does that leave him with? Sycophants.

I do think his parents failed him but at what point does he become responsible for his own choices?

In the sixth book he withdraws from everyone, but again he does have chances to seek support from his peers & Snape who he chooses not to confide in. It's a very lonely existence I'm sure but also... Choices.
