Sure, but that was a problem of his own making. He's the one who wanted to hang out with people who were not very smart and who hung on his every word and obeyed him. He could have had friends, there were other smart Slytherins.

His other dorm mates are Nott and Zabini though, and as far as I recall, are both neutral in the war, even though Nott's father is a DE. Whilst Lucius might have encouraged/allowed him to associate with the Nott family, Nott Jr might not have been interested due to the DE ties. Same with Zabini.

He clearly dislikes Pansy Parkinson, and apart from her the other girls aren't mentioned much (despite him going on to marry one of his yearmates younger sisters)

As for the other Slytherins, well he WAS a stuck up little prat for most of the series. Despite how fandom likes to woobify him, in canon there aren't that many redeeming features about him that'd encourage others to associate with him, unless they something - something he's probably been trained to look out for.

Draco Malfoy must have been terribly lonely while he was at school. We saw a little of this when Harry and Ron turned into Crabbe and Goyle. Both C&G were pretty unintelligent, and we saw how Draco treated them as dumb minions. He didn't seem to have much of a relationship with other Slytherins, so he was just stuck with these dumb people.

I think his upbringing didn't make things like real friendships or intimacies very easy. I mean, he didn't do himself a lot of favors, but his father was a horrible person and he was just a little kid for so much of the series - I do feel for him.
Malfoy gets a clue and tries to be good/fix it kind of fics are my very favorite.

the convenience of narrative - you're not seeing the behind-the-scenes life of other characters because it's not relevant to a Harry-centric POV. don't forget that the start of, I think, 6? Draco's hanging out with a pack of what I would definitely call friends of a popular, rich snob on the train, including his wannabe girlfriend. sycophants maybe, but people in that orbit would call each other friends until and unless there's a reason to kick them from the circle.

Draco Malfoy is a thin sheet of tropes stapled together, not nearly as fleshed out a character as the leather pants brigade wants to think. no shade, there was a grain of a potentially interesting character buried in there, but of all things about him I'd never say lonely. have fun writing some fic about it, sounds like a fun idea to explore OP.

I agree, I never found Draco that fascinating of a character, and didn't see what the huge appeal to him was.

DA
Same!

I had a huge crush on Draco after watching Chamber of Secrets (watched the first 2 films before I read the books), but I knew full well it was because Tom Felton was cute with his slicked back blonde hair and blue eyes. Draco as a character in both films and books was a bully from a wealthy family. And straight up blood purist who wore his bigotry with pride until Voldemort began humiliating/punishing his family.
I don't see anything worth looking into more than what we got in the series. His arch was kinder to him and his family than what I thought they deserved, so it's weird to see so many fans fawn over such a lame character.

This coming from a Harry/Draco shipper too lmao

he probably preferred being around people he considered less intelligent than him. i think a smart person would have made him feel insecure and he'd start a competitive rivalry with them like he did with Harry. that's about as close to a real friendship that i think he was capable of having.

I agree

I think Draco had opportunities to make deeper connections to other Slytherins, but given how he chose to have people dumber than him as his "friends"/body guards wouldn't that be his own fault?

Even though I shipped Harry/Draco, I never really understood Draco defenders who want us all to feel bad for Draco. IDK why he is so deserving of more grace than what he got in canon (which IMO is kinder than what he deserved).

People like Harry (skill, fame) & Hermione (intelligence) make him feel insecure. He feels superiority next to people like Ron because Ron isn't rich & doesn't come from a family with connections. He did feel comfortable approaching Harry but that was before he knew what the other was like. That Harry doesn't believe in upstairs, downstairs philosophy comes as a shock to him because that's all that matters to him.

So what does that leave him with? Sycophants.

I do think his parents failed him but at what point does he become responsible for his own choices?

In the sixth book he withdraws from everyone, but again he does have chances to seek support from his peers & Snape who he chooses not to confide in. It's a very lonely existence I'm sure but also... Choices.
