I wouldn't mind the trend of publishing longform fanfic with serial numbers filed off as romantic fiction if it wasn't mostly het stuff

Hard same. Gimme some tropey, poorly disguised fanfic, but please, make it gay.

I don't MIND this, but also, I can just read it for free?

Only example of non-het "fic" published as a book I know is Carry On by Rainbow Rowell (it was an okay book, brought back HP fandom feelings). Are there even any others?

There's that Draco/Hermione Handmaiden style fanfic trilogy that got published, it's HUGE rn and I think there's a Reylo one that got turned into a book or two?

Isn't the objective to sell a lot? Does M/M have a comparable market? I'm not sure.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-05 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
I’d say I agree but they’re often so fucking bad that I wouldn’t want to pay for it even if they were gay.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-05 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly agree. I've read a few queer fic-turned-novels and they are just straight up bad. I never read the original fic so not sure if it just didn't transfer or the whole thing was just bad to start.

Yeah, I kind of feel the same, but the het stuff for big fandoms is the only fic that goes super viral on BookTok. It's a bigger/more mainstream market and also one less likely to get suppressed by the Algorithm, I'm guessing. I'm sure even there is novel-length het romance fics in smaller fandoms that would be perfect for republishing as profic, but they don't get that treatment because they only have a couple of hundred hits instead of over a million. Instead, all you get is Twilight, Dramione, Reylo (and maybe Darklina?) expy het. But yeah, gay romance fic is definitely in that group of "popular but not popular enough to get professionally published" fanfiction (outside of a couple of outliers).

You made some good points there!

Joke’s on me and my silly fic m/m ship expy book that I have been writing
