Only example of non-het "fic" published as a book I know is Carry On by Rainbow Rowell (it was an okay book, brought back HP fandom feelings). Are there even any others?

Yeah, I kind of feel the same, but the het stuff for big fandoms is the only fic that goes super viral on BookTok. It's a bigger/more mainstream market and also one less likely to get suppressed by the Algorithm, I'm guessing. I'm sure even there is novel-length het romance fics in smaller fandoms that would be perfect for republishing as profic, but they don't get that treatment because they only have a couple of hundred hits instead of over a million. Instead, all you get is Twilight, Dramione, Reylo (and maybe Darklina?) expy het. But yeah, gay romance fic is definitely in that group of "popular but not popular enough to get professionally published" fanfiction (outside of a couple of outliers).

I'd never shame someone else for enjoying reader-insert fanfic, but I thought it was something I put behind me after my teens. (I was an adult now and more maturely got off to characters fucking each other instead. LOL!) Now, in my late 30s, I am happily diving back in. So much reader-insert PWP! I hope at least part of this is feeling better about myself and my body.

Honestly the major reason I don't like it is because I find I don't usually relate to the "reader" or want things happening the exact way things are happening for them. It is much easier for me to immerse myself when it is fictional characters.

Oh man, that opens up a whole new plethora of fic for you to enjoy for the first time! How exciting. Sometimes I wish I were more flexible in my fic reading, but alas I am not so I am stuck rereading or pointlessly searching my dead fandom for new fics that fit my wants.

I didn't enjoy them much as a teen, but enjoy them more now as an adult. I do think security on the self helps a lot, but also just more easily ignoring the "cringy" aspect of it.
